How does 8th feel about the ASUS Eee?
ASUS Eee PC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I want a laptop, and all I would really use it for is the internet, music, some pictures, and school work. No games really. I don't know much about computers, nor do I have any experience with Linux, but from what a buddy of mine says (he's a computer genius), this would be a good and cheap option for me.... |

According to Wikipedia it's $299 in the States, you could probably find a decent Dell, Gateway or Acer laptop for something around $499 on a Windows system and have much more flexibility with what you could do with it. Or get a used laptop via eBay or something and save yourself even more money.
Either way, I wouldn't be too quick to put down my money on such a limiting device. |

I want an Asus EEE very badly. I held one and it is so small and damn portable.
Heres a bunch of mods on the earlier EEE before they had wireless, bluetooth etc. Eee PC Internal Upgrades - ivc wiki The SSD is really damn fast. |

It looks like a really nice computer for something small and cheap. If you put much music on it, you'll soon be needing an SD card for additional storage, but those are cheap now.
I am a Linux user; its all my home computer runs. I'm not familiar with the distribution on the Eee PC, but it does sound like they've put plenty of good apps on it and made it easy to use. I often find the Linux apps I have at home let me do what I want with less fuss than the Windows apps I use at work. That might be because I've been using it so much, so consider me bias. There is a Window emulator for Linux, called Wine. I don't know if its on the Eee PC as shipped, but I'm sure it can be put on the Eee. It won't run everything, but the biggest problem for it are games and MS Office. If you're not playing games (there are some fun Linux ones that'll run on the Eee) and you're using Open Office (I think its pre-installed) then that may keep Wine useful for you. Still, its better to run native apps on any system. Enjoy! |

I finally got the chance to mess around with one of these for the first time in person today. It's pretty much exactly what I expected in terms of how to use it and everything. I did notice two things that I wish it had though:
1. a camera 2. a disk drive haha After noticing there isn't anywhere to put in a disk, I'm having second thoughts about it. I know I can run most things through a flash drive if I had to, but I think I'd rather not have to go through the trouble of uploading everything off of a cd, onto a flashdrive, and then onto my computer. |

You can get one with a camera, it's a web cam.
You can use a usd drive to hookup if you really need to, or use wireless network to transfer your files. (like the airmac does) Quote:
