It doesn't make sense for sony to back up hd dvd. There are only a limited numer of movies out on hd dvd and toshiba isn't going to be making any more. Sony wouldn't spend money on supporting a dead format.

Sony isn't going to help them manufacture discs. Their drives will just be able to read the encoding of the hd-dvd

You work for Best Buy huh? Only those morons would honestly say something like this. If you really knew Sony and how that company thinks, there's no way you'd believe they'd add HD-DVD capabilities to their player. Sony has a "Follow us or **** off" kind of mentality so there's a better chance of finding a BluRay/BetaMax combo player before BD/HD DVD. Better yet, just stop talking.

First of all, I don't work for best buy. Most those guys don't know squat about electronics and work for a weak hourly wage. Also I'd like to say, you don't know what sony has the capability of. I wouldn't second guess it either. The first time a sony rep presented the intro to the ultra hi-def content I was in awe not only to the revolution in video playback but also the fact that he was presenting with a toshiba projector.
Sony does it because they can. Why does sony make batteries for just about every manufacture up to their exact specification? Why do they make cds for the crappiest manufacture GQ and lets not forget about microsoft or fujitsu? A big part of sony yet a competitor, yet very supportive.

I found Tigerdirect selling HD-DVD and 7 free HD discs for $89, sounds like a good idea if you're interested in a cheap upconverting DVD with HDMI (upconverts SD-DVD to 1080i). Seems Warner Brothers support V-TEC'd Blu Ray to the finish line.

Sony can't be spiteful like that because the idea is to make every movie available on Blu Ray otherwise standard def DVD will never fade away. Blu Ray has a long way to catch up to DVD, how many people are going to consider buying their libraries over again in the new format when you're usually offered only better audio & visuals at a substantially higher price (or the same old extra content in SD). As long as movie catalogs are plentiful people will need to purchase the hardware to play them on.

I wonder how long is Blu Ray going to last since the next level is to "rent" instead of owning the media and it's packaging?

Where does your experience come from then? You sound like a CC or BB person. Probably a manager going by the arrogance and lack of knowledge. So I don't know what Sony's capable of? I've only been selling their product for a decade now, what's that mean? Your infinite knowledge at age 20 knows something I don't? Please, don't just make comments without anything to back it up. I heard Sony has just released their new HD DVD and BetaMax combo player... you don't know. hahaha I also heard their plasmas leak gas and need to be recharged via the HDMI port and can cause prostate cancer. Right? Right?

Now that there's one deifnitive HD disc format you should start seeing the prices go down just like they did with DVD and once they stopped selling VHS movies at $80 each (in the eighties before Beverly Hills Cop).

So because you are older and work at best buy all of a sudden you know more than me about a product that has nothing to do with a decade of experience. What a retarded statement. Proves you really can't teach an old dog new tricks.

i understand, but most things involving ibm, in my experience, seem to be underdog winners.
besides, they will sell computers with linux on them from the factory. which i think is a great move and killer blow to microsoft.
SUCK ON THAT VISTA
