External Hard Drives...
Any of you guys have one?
I want to get one, just realized I have 3 GB left out of the 150 on my computer. What external hard drives are you running and can recommend, or which do you recommend that I stay away from? Are you happy with yours or had any problems? What brand should I stick with? I plan on getting a 250-500. Last edited by 0720Steve; 02-18-2008 at 03:15 PM. |

I bought a 320 gb SATA internal hard drive and an external case from newegg.com for about $90 total. I bought the two separately and put the drive into the case, it's a lot cheaper than buying an external hard drive.
I love it!! Extremely fast transfers. |

Just found this at newegg : Newegg.com - Fantom Titanium II TFD1000U16 1TB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache USB 2.0 External Hard Drive - Retail 1 TB external for $229 That's tempting... I found my 320 gb hdd in their "Specials" section. I think it was a refurb but still carried a warranty so meh! |

For reliability IMO, Seagate hard drives are my faves with Western Digital coming in second.
I like making my own just because I don't like most manufacturer's cases and interface options. If you need more space, but don't need the portability of an external, you could save yourself some money by just adding another internal hard drive in your computer. You can always turn it into an external later on. |

yeah...go with Seagate or Western Digital.....when you do decide to get one though buy one that turns on and off with your computer. the first one I bought was a "ROCK" external and it has an on / off switch that you have to turn manually on and off when you want to use it. Was kind of a pain in the butt. I believe all the Western's and Seagates turn on and off automatically but check to make sure. Also with the way the prices are coming down on them now...get one with more memory than you really need...believe me you will end up using it. I've got 3 500 GB ones now. 1 for music, 1 for movies, and 1 for a backup for my PC.

I have several LaCie drives (2 FA Porche 250GBs, Big Disk 500GB), and a 500GB WD Mybook triple interface. I'm actually about to get another 1TB and am torn between the WD Mybook Studio Quadruple interface and the Iomega Ultra max. I would like a triple interface 1 TB Gtech G-drive, but they are $450.
Mybook pros: has eSata connection, which might make it more future proof if that's the way the industry heads. $279 at amazon. Mybook cons: a single drive, reports of a quality drop in manufacturing (I have had no probs with my current mybook which sees lots of use, travels with me daily). Ultamax pros: Raid 0 or Raid 1, 2 drives, cool and durable design. Ultramax cons: noisy fan, costs $40 more than the WD. |

If you have $500 to spend, I would recommend this - get two of them...
Western Digital - 1TB Internal Hard Drive - WD10000CSRTL |

I have a 500gig internal drive. I had it mounted in an enclosement, but that failed so now it is inside the machine. Currently I have 2 Western Digital 160's, and a Seagate 500.
Seagate is the way to go, i have had 2 maxtor drives fail on me, and my friend who works as a comp repair guy says he gets about 1 dead maxtor a day. |
