Not paying top top top dollar and wanting a bleeding edge (meaning to say, it BARELY plays new games, for the most part) laptop is just not in the cards. You either seriously empty your bankroll, find that games coming out just a few scant months after are horrendously slow on the rig -- but it will likely be BOTH.
What games are you aiming to play on the road, that you can't play at home? My new laptop, essentially, I just made sure can play some older games I really enjoy. Source-games, and a few other PC games that I still have fun playing. And MAME.

but like everyone else pretty much said, laptops are not exactly great in the long run (lack of upgradability) |

LOL, yeah. It's fairly bad when I worry about my new one being able to play CS: Source. I actually looked around for benchmarks on it! But, I'm sure it'll handle it, considering it's a 8xxxm card. I really wanted it for school, rather than current gaming anyway.

This is my laptop. I haven't had any of the problems listed in the reviews, and I am running Vista on it... I'm still happy that SP1 for Vista will be released within the next couple of weeks (looking for even more of a performance boost.)
This laptop is a beast for under $1700, I haven't found a game that I can't run full graphics on and still be playable. The screen is beautiful and I just can't say enough good stuff about Asus... Plus it comes with a 3yr parts and labor warranty and a 1yr accidental damage warranty without paying extra for it. |

alienware is ok i guess. I have a family computer that everyone uses but i bought myself this laptop that im using for myself right now. It has alienware, but to be honest, id rather go gaming on the ps3 or 360 ect. I have alot of consoles and I have the ps3 as well, its much better than gaming on the laptop. You could build like a top end desktop for $750 if you know how. I've helped my friend do it, turned out great. I also mod systems, ill send you pics if you want. PM me for them. I mod xbox's and ps2's ect. I do mod chips and work with Evolution-X. I can do apperance mods if you want, but its a waste of money, who cares what it looks like right?
If you want to do this type of gaming, I can install a Xecuter Smart-t v3 mod chip into the motherboard of your laptop or desktop and then you will be able to play xbox and xbox360 games. Beware, dont tell to many people, you might get caught. If you want the modchip it will take up about only 20mb on your harddrive, nothing really. PM me for pics |

Gateway P-6831FX
this is one badass laptop (which im using now) I purchased it at bestbuy for 1249.99 usd and it can handle crysis on the laptops highest resolution on medium settings and almost every other pc game before crysis with max on everything (including call of duty 4). P-16831fx gateway 8800m gts - Notebook Forums and Laptop Discussion that's the link to a review of the notebook. i think bestbuy did hike up the price to 1700.00 usd though so im not sure if you can still find it at the price i paid for. |

Why not? all you need are a couple of cables and controllers. You can move it anywhere where a TV is. As compared to a PC that can run similar games it is ultra portable.
The fact is, if you want to be playing crysis on full resolution and full 8xAA, etc. while "on-the-go" you're dreaming. The biggest enemy to laptop performance is battery life. The fact that battery technology has not significantly advanced in a decade, computer manufacturers are demanding hardware with low power consumption. (i.e will never be a gaming computer) |

My buddy bought this same Gateway laptop like 6 months ago with a slightly faster processor and it plays games just fine. He takes it out all the time and plays COD4 with the options cranked up. I've got a similar one, but it's got integrated graphics since I don't play games. Great laptops. On a powerful laptop the battery is only going to last about 1/2 an hour playing a game, and performance suffers too since hardware goes into power saving mode. It's nice to be able to take your whole computer with you though, I love laptops. |
