it allows research scientists to use your PS3 processor to compute large computational problems. most of these problems relate to simulating molecules. by doing this, problems that would take a very long time to compute on one machine can be finished in a fraction of the time by dividing parts of the problems to many PS3s.

Folding@home

Folding@home connects your PS3 system to Stanford University's Folding@home distributed computing networ.By connecting to this network, your PS3 system will help sipport medical research design to increase out understanding of esrious diseases. This research may eventually lead to cures.Folding@homes is supported by Stanford University and volunteers who are making contributionto society by donating computing power to this important project.

^exactly. What the program is doing is folding a protein. Folding in protein happens at the molecular level. It is basically the difference between a protein that is in the assembly stage to a protein that is completed. There are inter-molecular and intra-molecular forces at work. With the change of a single amino acid (building block of protein) the entire three dimensional shape can change. If a protein is mis-folded or mis-assembled, it can be useless to the body or even harmful. A supercomputer alone can only focus on one protein at a time. The folding@home project is just trying to compile a plethora of data faster, hopefully promoting the health industry into new areas that would otherwise be years or decades away.
