Okay, so I am looking for a new cell phone (as is the g/f). I see a lot of you have "unlocked" phones. Where do you get them? eBay? Will they work with ANY carrier, because we're thinking of switching service as well.
Thanks for any help.

for example, cingular uses 850, and most asian/european phones don't support 850, so you'll have to buy a phone that matches. It should list "triband" "quadband" on the phone description. www.phonescoop.com |

http://wirelessimports.com They have good prices, and I haven't read many bad reviews about them. I got my SLVR phone from myworldphone.com. They're cheap, but forget about any customer service if you have any type of problem. I learned this the hard way and others have had similar bad experiences with them. Laissez faire! There are two types of unlocked phones. 1) Factory unlocked and 2) um, well, not factory unlocked. The factory unlocked phones the ones that come straight from the factory before carriers get their hands on them to lock the phone to their own network. You can unlock a phone after it has been locked provided you have the correct passkey. Sometimes it's just an alphanumeric code you can enter in with the keypad on your phone, sometimes you need special software and a datacable. Usually the unlocked phones you find available online are imported from other countries, so they have a non-US plug. Reputable retailers will provide you with an appropriate adapter, if it's necessary. You can use an unlocked phone if you have an existing cellular subscription with a SIM card. You basically slip your SIM card into your unlocked phone and it should work fine, as long as the phone operates on one of your network's GSM frequencies. Lots of good information at HowardForums.com. |

I need a phone now. I can't get in touch with anyone, and I certainly cant surf the net at work now without any type of phone with webservice. I really want to get a sidekick 2 again, but if the 3 comes out in a few months then I basically threw 200 bucks down the toilet. Oh, the bitter agony. I'm thinking about buying a cheap 20 dollar phone at the local t-molbile shop and using it until then, but sidekick users have a special service plan, which differs from regular phone plans, so I don't know if they'll still charge me for my sidekick service with a shitty phone.
