Thanks, that was helpful. I also came across this article on LCD vs. Plasma. The sets tested are waaaay out of my price range, but I learned a little. maybe it will help others:

LCD FTW always!!!

better in the longrun. cheaper, less "fragile," easier to maintain....EXCELLENT quality even still.
<~proud owner of my first LCD 26" HDTV for my bedroom i got for Christmas this year.

Personally, I have a DLP 60+ inches w/ 6 color wheel for home theater, LCD with 120 hz for regular tv, CRT projection for games (works with light guns), and a tube as standby (just in case). DLP and LCD are my favorites, convergence on a CRT projection is a pain, tubes are heavy and dead technology, plasma is nice but the screen door effect is annoying -the only thing keeping plasma alive is that screen size increases are ahead of LCD and they're cheaper than LCD.

Don't buy a LCD flat screen until you see one with 120 hz refresh rate. Samsung, Sony, and Sharp have it, Toshiba will release theirs in March/April. It's the thing that'll liven up your Blu Rays discs even more!!! And if you can, get one with LED bacing (it'll last you forever).

I was talking to the guy above you who recommended an e-tailer...

as for the new "experts".... *sigh* I'm done. If anyone has any questions from someone who actually understands technology, PM me. Otherwise, ask here and get way off answers.

some interesting news on panasonic plasmas... a few new features in the new spring lineup including "game mode," "one sheet of glass" design concept and a 46" size/price point.

Sony had an incredible OLED (Organic LED) display (19" I think) that was superthin (talking iPod shuffle thin) and has a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio -this will be be incredible when it goes into production in 40+ inches.

Go to a store pick the best TVs that you like. Put them all side by side and make your choice. You'll be surprised that some of the cheaper tvs look as good as the name brand ones. Like vizio

^Banned from ever giving recommendations in anything electronics. Vizio... please.

I'm curious to see how Panasonic does with the single glass as that's what's helped Pioneer be the best overall picture. That's going to do wonders for their depth perception.

The OLED is a wee bit expensive. $2300 retail for an 11" right now. Let's see when the 27" hits the market what'll happen.

To be fair, Vizio products aren't something I'd use for my home theater set up but they are good products that bring HD to the masses at a fair price. Best of all, it's American too -they're based in California by a Asian imigrant and built in Taiwan.

We have a 50" Panasonic TH-50PZ77U Plasma "TV" just bought last week. My only gripe is that brightness doesn't really ramp up when I adjust it. However, picture is very clear and the "anti-glare" stuff really works -- it's relatively close to a large (10ft wide) window, and it's visible enough at those angles.

I'm finally going to get my first hdtv...been wanting to get one for a few years but i have had other priorities so i finally decided to get one since my tube sony wega in my room crapped out...

I've been doing a lot of research b/c i'm not gonna dump close to 3k on a tv w/o knowing the pros and cons of each...anyhow, i'm trying to decide whether i should go with plasma or lcd...I'm leaning more towards the plasmas right now because i've seen them side by side with lcd's and the colors are more vivid and very rich compared to the lcd's...i like that about them but is burn in really an issue with the newer models? seems to me that the burn in issue would be the only thing that would prevent me from buying them...but i don't think it's much of a serious issue as people make it out to be....thoughts?

Sony makes an oled for an 15.4" fz series that is normally retailing for $1800. Their previous models retailed for $2100

If you have alot of light coming into the room where the TV will be plasma may not be the best choice due to the glass front. The picture is almost gone due to glare. The burn in should only be an issue if you are a big gamer, and play on the TV regularly.
