I enjoy the picture from the Sony 60" SRXD 1080P display that I currently own. I know its limits and will certainly be 'upgrading' again at some point in the future. I know the bulb life on this unit is going to make it 'expensive' in the long run. For price at the time I bought it, it was an easy decision.

Family just picked up a 50" Panasonic TH-50PZ77U Plasma last night. UNFORTUNATELY, as is wont, the BluRay player we got with it doesn't work! But, picture was fairly good on it.

They gave me the sharp model: BD-HP20U. The upconversion on normal DVD's looks great too... haven't even played a blu-ray on it yet. Got a MIR for 5 BD's as well.

Sharp - AQUOS Blu-ray Disc Player with 1080p Upconversion - BD-HP20U

Here's the TV I got: Sharp - AQUOS 42" 1080p Flat-Panel LCD HDTV - LC-42D64U

Since I'm financing it and get a blu-ray player for free, I didn't think the price was too bad. I saw that I could get it for $200-300 less online from smaller e-tellers. Then the thing rang up as $1100 at the register!! I just kinda smiled and tried to get out of there as fast as possible in case it was a mistake. I was in shock... didn't expect to save $500 just because.

problem is, manufacturer's are not profiting as much on the RPTVs like they expected too. Main problem is wayyyy to many people buy them not knowing about the bulb therefore they have to send out free bulbs to keep customers happy and that way they keep buying your product. A buddy of mine bought a Samsung 42" DLP because he got a great price on it open box. Well, the bulb died about a year later and after a little running around, they upgraded him to a 50" 1080p free of charge.

I hope this isn't a thread jack, but I'm curious to what would you guys recommend for my situation? I'm currently using very old tube TV's that have seen better days. It's time for an upgrade. I'm happy to wait for lower prices, but I don't want to miss too much more of the NHL hockey season without HD. lol.

Here are a few requirements/parameters:
  • around 50" in size, not completely set on size... could go up or down depending on the bargain
  • would like to spend around $1500 (if possible)
  • Play 360 games
  • Watch HD sports, SD TV and Standard DVDs
  • would prefer the 120MHz refresh rate thingee

additional parameters
  • there is low ambient lighting in room (windows with blinds)
  • would like to wall mount, but not absolutely required
  • from where I would like to hang it, the viewing angles are fairly low, mostly straight on
  • Just browsing TV's at Sams club, without any regard to specs/price, the Sony Bravias looked the best to me
  • I'm very picky about color and contrast, and I absolutely hate the blurry motion I saw on a few sets at sams (can't remember the brands)

I can get a good deal on Panasonic and Toshiba. For a 50" Plasma or LCD it will probably have to be a 720P set to keep it under $1500.

PM me if you're interested.

I currently own a 42" Samsung plasma and I've very happy with it. Although I'm kinda pissed it doesn't have 1080p (which i didn't know much about when buying) I'm still very content with it. HD-DVD movies look great on it even though I can tell the different between 1080i and 1080p. The burn-ins are not an issue as long as you are not a video game freak. I've had temporary burn-ins with Madden 08 where the score board was still displayed on the bottom of the screen. With my Samsung, watching something with a lot of color (Movie or TV shows) it eventually goes away and you can never tell it was once there. Also, plasma's I believe are brighter and have better black levels. So I'm happy with that.

Only regret I have is that I wish it had 1080p (which has nothing to do with which is better) and the temp. burn-ins even though it's avoidable.

wow man, you're really asking for a lot without giving the budget to allow for it. For that price, you can't even get into a 40" that'll give you 120htz. But if you go with Plasma, you won't have to worry about 120 as that's something that was made to help the lag and motion blur of LCD. I wouldn't sweat burn in as already stated, it'll go away while watching regular TV or just playing a different game. It's the static images to worry about. If you up your budget just a bit, you can get into a 1080p Panasonic plasma. Then again, it's coming up on new model season here in a few weeks/months so waiting just a bit means old models will be clearanced out because as always, new models means same if not lower price. Gotta love how Consumer Electronics is literally the only industry in the world that is not affected by inflation. Thank you WalMart.

I know a local store around us is having a big screen sale. No interest til 2012 on ALL Sony XBR Panasonic 50-65"Plasma & Mitsubishi 46-73" LCD & DLP HDTV's. See store for details. That's four years to pay it off.

The Big Screen Store | Your Entire Home Theatre From One Store

I don't think there are any near you though but TV's sales do happen around Super Bowl time. Good luck.

umm, thanks... I guess I should have stated that my price is somewhat flexible, and that I'd be willing to adjust size/price to get the best value. 40" would probably be fine truth be told, as my current tube TV is 32". 50" seemed like the right size in the store though. I guess I listed all that to give a general picture of what I would like... but what I most want to know is where's the best bang for buck right now!? What would you buy today if you were looking? I read about all those people getting 1080p for $1,000-1,600 before the holidays!? wtf?

Well I've had a Philips 50" Widescreen flat TV with Pixel Plus 3 HD 50PFP5332D/37 since may and had my PS3 hooked up to it constantly for about 4 hours a day and have no burn in at all.

Brdhouse - This is in your price range...

Here's a link... (price has dropped another $100 since I bought it)

Sam's Club - 50" Philips HD Plasma TV

We love it so much that we bought the exact matching 32" LCD version for the bedroom on black friday for a steal ($599 instead of the regular $849 from Best Buy).

As far as picture goes, I prefer the look of the Plasma over the LCD... it has a lot deeper picture. The HD picture looks awesome on both of them, but the Plasma has the edge.

I did a lot of research before buying the TV's and thought about DLP simply for the 1080p feature. Looking side by side, I couldn't tell a difference, nothing is really 'broadcast' in 1080p yet, admittedly Blu Ray is in 1080p and the PS3 plays 1080p games, but I couldn't tell a noticeable difference even tho I know there is one.

So I went for my 50" 720p Plasma and my 32" 720p LCD.

They both work great for me.

^Take advice with a grain of salt. If someone said drinking your own piss would get you a buzz, would you still try it? Not all advice is advised...

Yes pre-Xmas there were a lot of deals going on but either they were eTailers who personally I would never trust to send $1000-1600 over the 'net to or were close outs or great sale prices for the holiday season. Give it a little longer and you'll see those prices again. eTailers can't always be trusted. You'd be surprised how many are black market, open box, refurbished, etc while claiming to be BNIB. Be patient and shop local. There's something to be said for service when you need it.
