Blu Ray, buy a PS3, least expensive Blu Ray player on the Market, plus you get all the fun of a Game Box to boot.
Sony owns a lot of movie property, and right now HD and Blu ray are new techs, it will be a battle like beta and vhs. Toshiba - HD DVD Sony - Blu Ray There are players that do both. (I'd get the ps3) |

I wouldn't bother with either yet. Wait to see who wins the war.
I have a PS3 but I still buy regular dvd's. I did buy 4 Blu ray just to see the quality. Who would want to get stuck with all the movies you buy then have to replace them because they stopped making the player for that format. If you can't wait, just pick one that has the most movies you want to see. I don't think the quality on one format is better than the other. |

As far as the beta vs. vhs battle.. Who won? VHS. Why? Because pr0n signed up to only be on vhs. The pr0n industry has already said that they will only release adult movies in hd-dvd format.. That's extremely significant considering something like 70% (it may have been 60%) of the movies sold in the us are pr0n. Split the remaining 30% up half & half for blu ray and hd dvd and you end up with hd dvd getting 85% of movie sales. Yes, the quality is better.. but not by as much as people like to claim. I highly doubt that you would sit down with the same movie playing on 2 exact same tv's, one of them running hd dvd and one running blu ray and say with a straight face that one looks exceptionally better. A little better, yes. A whole lot better? That's a big negative. Hell, I'd even be willing to bet that joe blow nobody wouldn't even be able to tell which one was which. If I were you I would read up on the new format that's supposed to be coming out early next year that plays on hd dvd & blu-ray players. I haven't heard anything about it for quite some time but the last time I did read about it there were quite a few companies signing up. :shrugs: Oh, and if you just want a gaming system and that's the reason for asking.. wait for the next 360 to come out. Straight hd-dvd playback out of the box (to compete with ps3) and over 3 times the number of games.. a lot of which are really great games. The downside with the 360 - no gran turismo. That makes me sad. The downside of the ps3 - no forza 2. That makes me happy. Forza 2 is almost equal to what gran turismo is supposed to be, but no one could ever dethrone the king. Gran Turismo > *

saw batman begins on blu ray...can't say i liked it because it looked like i was watching the news and not an entertainment movie. as for format, i say blu ray because the discs are less prone to scratches because of the special coating they use from TDK i believe it is

^I've got to say that's not that good of a reason. I mean, all you have to do is lightly buff a disc to get the scratches out. The information on a cd is actually stored right below the cover, not on the bottom so using a scratch filler (I've heard of people using scratch-x) or just lightly buffing it out should do the trick most of the time. If it's gouged then forget about it, lol.

A major porn distributor just announced that they will be releasing movies in Blu-ray, so that notion doesn't hold much weight any longer. Both formats have specific distributor exclusivity depending on which company you're talking about.
I would suggest factoring in price and distributor exclusivity before buying. Do some research to see which of your favorite movies have already been released, then see which format they're in. If you're only factoring in price, your best choices in brands are usually Toshiba, Sony, and Samsung. I personally have both players...Toshiba HD-DVD and Samsung Blu-ray, but I suspect that within the next year dual-format players will become more common and this whole "war" will become a moot point. |

wait ~2 months, combo players will be out. i believe LG already has one but its not too good, Samsung has one coming out in mid Jan that has good reviews but its expensive..
if you are gonna go with one, Blue Ray definetly has the better movies. and firm, there are alot of reasons to have a PS3..and forza 2 is a POS. im not kidding. |
