Had a weird problem this morning.

Got to class and turned my new MacBook on. It showed the screen with the "loading" cursor, but when it got to the enter password area, the screen turned black. I went to hit the brightness adjustor, and when I did, it would show the screen briefly before going back to black.

I hard rebooted it. What the hell was that.

I think if you stump a genius, you should win some sort of prize or a 20% discount...

Haha that'd be nice. My Ipod Touch doesn't sync smart playlists if the live updating is turned off. So I either have the playlist automatically update itself with new songs that fit in the parameters and not have it sync to my iPod... or I turn off live updating, have it sync with my iPod and have a smart playlist that is no longer smart. Aside from having no idea what I was even talking about he said he had admitted that he had no idea how to fix it lol.

I've heard there seems to be a lot of bugs w/ smart playlists and live update.

It sounds mainly like a software problem, so I'm a sure an update in the near future will alleviate your pain. Make sure to keep up on your updates and firmware.

Just curious, can you turn off live update and run a manual sync instead?

Well the automatic syncing works fine... the live update is say you have the Recently Added playlist, that automatically updates the playlist when a new song is added. I have to disable that automatic updating, otherwise the playlist won't sync onto my iPod Touch. So I then have to turn on automatic updating so the playlist updates itself with all the current songs I've added, then turn it off and then sync the iPod. Or leave it off altogether, in which case I then have to manually add all new songs to the playlist and therefore negate the benefit of having a smart playlist to begin with. So there are definately ways to get around it but it's just annoying as hell. It seemed to be working fine until I got iTunes 13.6, but I've also just updated to 1.1.3 and iTunes 13.7 for the January Apps package and it didn't fix it, although others in the apple.com forums have said it fixed it on theirs... craziness lol.

and if you hit control at the same time as these combinations:

ctrl-cmd-shift-3
ctrl-cmd-shift-4

instead of creating a file with the image, it copies it to your clipboard.

a lot of these commands are found in the Keyboard & Mouse System Preference under the keyboard shortcuts tab.

I am excited, I am getting a Mac Pro, making it Intel #4 (and I thought I wouldn't like the transition from PPC) So now I have my 2.4GHz MacBook Pro, 1.8 GHz Mini (for the TV) and a 2 GHz MacBook for the wife. It's a nerd paradise at my house.

oh and I can handle iPod questions, I fix Macs during the day, and iPods at night.

There are some minor tweaks which I don't pay attention to but my very favorite new addition are the "spaces". Basically, they are like having four different screens you can work from. I usually put my chat windows in one space, internet in another, itunes in another, etc. That way, you don't have all your windows cluttering your screen.

Time Machine is also another new feature. You can back up all your past info on an external hard drive and recall it if you need it later. I don't use this feature though.

this is a known bug within the iPhone and iPod touch software and how it handles smart playlists.

As for me, I converted to Mac when they released the first MBP's, so I've got a 15" 2GHz with 2 & 80....

Also in my stable:

iPhone 8GB (Since 6/29/07 6:13pm)
iPod Nano (gen 3) 8GB
iPod Mini (gen 2) 4GB

Airport Extreme (802.11n)
Airport Express x2

Several keyboards, several mighty mice, and a plethora of accessories.

My brother works for Apple Corporate, so I get a nice discount whenever I go to the store, or order something through him.
