I love it, so far, except for a few things.

1.) No matter how much I tell myself to forget what I knew about PCs, my OCD-ridden mind keeps saying "anti-virus! spyware protection! defragmentation! disc cleanup!" Gonzo already gave me his opinion on all of this: what do others think? Also, everyone has said Macs don't need to be defragged or cleaned up as they do it themselves. As an ex-PC user, this baffles me and I feel I should have to do it!

2.) I need a case. I do not want this thing to look like my iPod. My friends use the InCase sleeves and love them. Is there any need for any actual plastic casing for the computer itself? I don't want it to scratch anywhere, or have palm-wear or key wear. What do people recommend?
I use Disk Warrior and Onyx for defrag/system maintenance. Also, before and after you install stuff make sure to Repair your disk permissions. Applications folder--> Utillities folder--> Disk Utility.app--> select your HD and click Repair permissions.

Yay mac people! I had an iBook G4 1.2Ghz, 30Gb HDD, 512Mb RAM. It was slow but reliable. I have since given that laptop to my sister and bought my new iMac 2.4Ghz, 4Gb RAM, 500Gb HDD with 500Gb External Backup Drive (Firewire800). Leaps and bounds faster. I love it. My dad has a Mac Pro with four 2.6Ghz cores, 5Gb RAM, and two 250Gb HDDs. My mom has a mac mini but I'm not sure on the specs. My brother has a macbook which I don't know his exact specs too. The whole house is now running Leopard as well :) I've now fully converted my entire family!

I'll probably get the Macbook Air next year. I have my iMac as my primary computer and next year I want a mobile laptop to compliment it. I don't use optical drives anyway. Aside from installing things and watching DVDs, they are useless to me. I don't burn CDs or DVDs lol

Look at the computers the MBA compares to! That price is not insane at all.

The price is definitely not insane - the Sony it was compared to goes for way over $2K, so for a Mac, that slim, and that innovative, that price is really good.

What I really want to get, since I still have my MacBook and wont buy a MacBook Air unless this one craps out on me, is the Time Capsule. The only thing holding me back from upgrading to Leopard was the fact that they removed wireless backup from the original launch, but this is now available, I see no reason not to upgrade. Given, they should have wireless backup available through your current removable HD, but that Time Capsule is sweet! "Wireless backup"... need you say more?

As have I.

Just got a 20" I Mac... 500gb HD, 2G Ram, 2.4GHz . I take my old 2.16Ghz, 80gb HD, 1G Ram macbook to work and everywhere else with me. I have a camera bag backpack with a place holder for my laptop. My Macbook is beat but still works like a dream! Next year, I plan on getting a MacPro.

The day the new penryn laptops are released, I am ordering the MBP. It was a tough decision to order that or new rims/tires, but my true love is Apple.

i dont get why everyone wants the new Air...IMO its a mediocre computer thats really small...for the same price you could get a MacBook Pro with pretty much all the options, and my MacBook Pro is an inch thin, its still a small computer.

but yeah my specs:
15" MacBook Pro: 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM (4 soon), GeForce 8600 GT
Software (most not legally paid for): Creative Suite 3, Adobe Lightroom, Painter X, Flock web browser, Azureus Vuze, Skype, VLC media player, X3 Reunion.

you guys can defend the price point but i still think its an exuberant price for a laptop. But at least Apple did it right as opposed to the sony equivalent.

Because of the novelty of having something new and stylish. Just like the Razr. I bought a Razr the first month they came out in '05 and spent $555 on one that had to be bought in France. There was nothing particularly fascinating about it other than its look. It's memory was crappy and it's abilities limited at the time. But I had the newest, coolest phone around. Whether or not there's anything out there as light, it's a funky and stylish looking thing. It's only a matter of time before it's technology catches up with it's looks.

I need functionality tho. Give me the MacPro

I wonder who is going to pay $1200 more for smaller hard drive on the new macbook air. Yes it is solid state, but $1200 more?

I think it is a 999$ upgrade, and check newegg or any other site that sells SSD. That is what they cost.

It is an amazing computer, for what it is made for! You can't compare the specs of a MBP and a MBA, its apples and oranges so to say. I love the MBA and the MBP, but I personally prefer the MBP as it would serve as my main computer. If I had a main computer, I would choose the MBA.

I'm stuck with my MB C2D 2.0 2GB currently until the penryns are put in the laptops.

I use my CDRom drive like most people use the remote on their T.V. I can and will until they add one. Which knowing Apple, will be waaaaaaayyyy sooner than later. Plus, I travel A LOT. But you do make a very valid point with the main computer comment.
