I actually just bought a Macbook last Wednesday. I love it so far. After getting a really nasty virus on my PC and wanting a laptop for a long time, I bought myself an early xmas present. Eventually I will replace my desktop with an iMac, but that will be a ways off.

In regards to cantu91676, if you were referring to backing up DVD's, use handbrake.

For backups, I really like SuperDuper. You can't go wrong with CarbonCloner.

I use multiple external hard drives that I rotate to store my backups.

It already took the place of my desktop. I'm using the mini-DVI cable to attach it to an external monitor though. The only time my uptime my PC desktop gets now is when I need to use a MS-based developing program to do my school work.

SuperDuper! is definitely the way to go for backing up your system. However, I would suggest to buy the full version of the software instead of the free version, due to the simple fact that you will be able to update your backups in minutes, instead of having to do a "whole" backup every time you open up SuperDuper! under the free version.

Okay, I'm going to be buying myself a nice, shiny new MacBook for Christmas, but I have a question. Can someone here tell me what the difference between model MB061LL/A and MB061LL/B?

MB061LL/A:
Amazon.com: Apple MacBook MB061LL/A 13.3" Notebook PC (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, Combo Drive) White: Electronics

MB061LL/B:
Amazon.com: Apple MacBook MB061LL/B 13.3" Notebook PC (2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, Combo Drive) White: Electronics

I want the most up-to-date, newest machine possible, coming with Leopard and the newest chips and what not. I'm not spending a grand for old technogy, and I'd like to be able to go into the Apple store and know what I need.

I am also contemplating a reliable case covering for the MacBook. I've seen my friend's cover and keyboard, and it looks like shit.

Congrats on your decision to go mac! I didn't look at your links, but you may consider waiting to see if new macbooks (revised Intel chips) are released 1/15 at the macworld expo... or if the rumored "ultra-portable" might be suitable for you.

taken from macrumors.com:

"Our Buyer's Guide, however, does not recommend buying MacBook Pros or Mac Pros at this time due to the long lead time since their last update. Rumors have also placed Mac Pro and MacBook Pro revisions in the near future with number of new Intel processors now available for the future machines. To balance this recommendation, however, readers should realize that updates could still be 1-2 months away, with Macworld Expo (January 15th) being the earliest possible date that these upgrades would be announced. And even if announced at Macworld, actual shipping dates could be delayed beyond that date."

"MacBook - Despite a November 2007 update, the MacBook could see competition with the Apple Sub-notebook expected at Macworld in January. So, unless you are certain that this ultra-portable will not change your decision, it would be best to wait to buy a MacBook until January 15th."

The first quoted paragraph is in regards to the MB Pro, so take that with a grain of salt, because there could likely be nothing new for macbooks... just sayin'. However, my theory is that new chip revisions to the MB Pros could also mean it would trickle down to the MBs.

Disclaimer: don't blame me if you wait and there is nothing new. If you need a computer now, then get one... just know, it will not be the fastest, most up-to-date MB for long. It's sad, but that's how apple works.

If it's cold outside, wait for mid January - Macworld always throws us for a loop.

understood,

but it's an interesting idea... say I'm somewhere and I need something from another office, home, whatever - you could technically have them put it in and have it installed remotely. It was obviously a space/weight thing so they tried to find a software solution to the lack of drive.

As some may know, I ended up buying a middle of the line MacBook just before Christmas.

I love it, so far, except for a few things.

1.) No matter how much I tell myself to forget what I knew about PCs, my OCD-ridden mind keeps saying "anti-virus! spyware protection! defragmentation! disc cleanup!" Gonzo already gave me his opinion on all of this: what do others think? Also, everyone has said Macs don't need to be defragged or cleaned up as they do it themselves. As an ex-PC user, this baffles me and I feel I should have to do it!

2.) I need a case. I do not want this thing to look like my iPod. My friends use the InCase sleeves and love them. Is there any need for any actual plastic casing for the computer itself? I don't want it to scratch anywhere, or have palm-wear or key wear. What do people recommend?

you can check this out as far as antivirus
ClamXav

defrag - osx does it behind the scenes
Defragmenting my MacBook - using iDefrag to solve Boot Camp errors

the online world is more after windows users for spyware/virus issues which make up a much larger population. Not only user base, but server base.

you can get cases, ...protective films for the display, etc... honestly there is a large market out there for them. If you want - look at a local book store and pick up a copy of macword. It's littered with accessories and stuff to protect them

you know vista does defrag by itself to not saying mac os x is the same but as a comparison point its kind of moot.
