radar detectors-- work?

Just to all of those out there who try to avoid cops and enjoy driving above that normal , non - Si people speed- limit ( lol)... do radar detectors really work? most people i talk to say by the time the detector goes off, you've already been tagged. i wanna hear all of you and what you think. thanks.

No, they dont always work. Cops dont like them either, so if you do get pulled over and you have one the cop more than likely isn't going to cut you any slack at all. DON'T SPEED!!

Radar and laser detectors do work, along with "some" i repeat "some" jammers. Like it was said above, police men do not like them at all. You get what you pay for also.

I got the Escort Passport 8500 X50 and I love it. I'm on the highway a lot and it lets me know well in advance if a cop "with radar" is coming up behind me or is ahead. I say "with radar", because it could be turned off within their car, so they could essentially creep up from behind you, while on the highway and basically determine your speed from theirs. It also gives off few false alarms. Has highway, city, and auto modes. I think it has been a good investment. No tickets yet since I have had it. I have had 3 tickets in the past and the cop never "cut me any slack". Asked for license, registration, walked back to his car, came back and tossed the ticket onto my lap all three times.

Don't speed? Try going 55 on the highway & see how long you last before you get run off the road or shot.

From what I understand, a cops radar can be turned on and off. So the only way the detector will work is if the cop turns his radar on and locks on someone, hopefully not you. I guess it's useful if a cop locks on someone in front of you to give you warning to slow down, but if you're on an empty street or something...

they work. ill pic up cops before i see them sometimes. Now if laser hits you your in trouble.
On the other hand if your traveling 80 mph and you get tagged you would be approaching a cop too fast to reduce your speed. Just for example

so yes and no for if they work.

I agree they do work, I have a Beltronics 995 top one in retail stores and it works very well....

But, theres a big, BUT, If the cop aims it at you and shots, Now your radar becomes a early ticket worning because now you know your getting one!!!!

Slow down and keep it safe to all..... i dont wana see any messed up 8thgens out there....

BTW has there been any fender benders in the new ones? j/w

Yes they work but like the others have said if the radar is off then there is on way to pick it up until they turn them on.

A few words of advice, get a high end detector. The extra money spent goes a long way in the quality.
You still have to use your common sense and judgement even with the detector. Dont assume just because you have one it doesnt mean you wont get a ticket.
If you get a wreckless driving ticket you know your way above the speed limit so your still going to take major chances even with a detector.

Most cops are lazy or forget about turning off the radar sometimes.
The times that it has saved my butt is driving at night when there is a cop in the middle of the highway all lights off.
Try to keep a car in front of you at least a quarter mile.

They work, but as others have said, they surely aren't foolproof. They are also illegal in some states, so check your state laws, and the state laws of any states you plan to travel through.

I use mine more to see where the police are than to save myself from speeding. Call me whatever, but I just don't like police officers. Yah yah, I know, it's their job, but I've seen too much harrasment, too much power tripping, too much racial profiling, too much age profiling, etc. I just want to know where they are at all times. I actually don't speed much, and never more than 5 or 10 over the speed limit. I just like the piece of mind of knowing where they are.

Do they work? Yes, but only the high end ones are worth your time/money.

Will they save you 100% of the time? No.

Your best 'detectors' are your eyes and plain common sense. If you're driving like a farking idiot you're probably going to get a ticket anyway, but having a radar detector is like having a third set of eyes... and they really do help.

I've been saved by my radar detector too many times to count. It is arguably one of the best 'mods' i've ever made to any car/truck that I've owned. They don't help all that much in they city as most cops will be using lidar, but if you do a ton of highway driving they are a godsend.

If you're seriously considering buying one you should check out the Escort Passport 8500 or one of the top of the line Bell radar detectors. They are going to run you between 250-345, so they're not cheap....

This is going a little off topic, but is there a Cop radio detector? All cop cars have an active radtio system onboard their cruiser, so why can't we track them by homing in on all cars using that frequency to communicate.

Also, is there a way to pinpoint their locations and have it integrate into a navigation system, so we can in essence, see them on radar? Maybe I've just been playing too much Grand Theft Auto, but having a navi that worked as a GPS cop tracker would be ******* awesome, and I'd pay any price for it.

Umm you can go to Radio shack and get a police scanner and mount it on your dash board. Its not gonna tell you where they are exactly, but you can listen into the calls and find out where they are going.

so true.

I have a Cobra I bought last year for $130 and now they sell for around $70. Works pretty damn well. My friend has a $1700 K40 radar system built into his evo. Now that's serious business.

I got one in my car within a week of owning it. Last week on sunshine coast it saved me 3 times as i as speeding my way through fun highway of corners, the RCMP were doing rolling radar as they drove through. It gave me enough time to slow down with out getting caught.
