A link about mac users.

The reason people who have macs never have problems is because how many problems can you have when all you use the computer for is checking email and myspacing? Also anyone can make software for windows, so that allows for a lot of crappy software. How many problems are you going to encounter when all the mac software ever created can be found in one aisle at best buy. Macs serve their audience perfectly: a pair of skin tight jeans, Gucci hand bags, sandals, what more are they going to want out of a computer than pretty colors and a fat price tag? Macs have become a status symbol.

If you're just an ordinary computer user and you want to be trendy, go ahead and spend 2k to do it in high def.

If you have a little more computer sense and you want more control over the machine, get the PC.

on the other hand i sold wireless cars to people with a 8 year old Windows 98 HP Pentium 2 and they were up and running in no time.

tell that to people to who bought a G5 but the microphone port on their motherboard broke and only 2 brands of PCI sound card manufacturers worked on Macs and they were both high end models that STARTED at $100, none of the $15-$25 sound cards works.

i used to work an electronic store, similar to best buy and circuit city except that it attracted the more tech savy crowd who installed components themselves and didnt pay tons of money or buy a new computer every 6 months.

trust me when i say that ALOT of stuff doesnt work on Macs.
Well, in my experience... I haven't had the problems you're talking about. Older macs do run on a closed system, with a completely different chip set (powerPC)... meaning not every piece of hardware, designed to run on a PC motherboard and chipset will work... especifically wireless cards and video cards as you mentioned. Yes, older macs will need an apple airport card, etc. I actually don't know if the newer machines running the Intel chipsets will have the same problems using non-apple sanctioned parts, but I doubt it. Another point to mention is that better parts (apple sanctioned) are designed and tested to work flawlessly with the OS, and in theory won't fail as much as the cheap stuff... there is some truth behind the "just works" statement.

That said, the only problem I've ever had was a failed HD in my powerbook g4 (powerPC chipset), but I went to the electronics store, bought a new one (off the shelf seagate) and was back up and running in a hour or so.

Anyway, I shoulda just kept my mouth shut... I really didn't want to get this far into a mac vs. pc debate. Caliguy asked a few specific questions, I answered them but got sidetracked reponding to another post... and into this age-old debate which isn't really the point of the thread. Bottom line is to each his own.

I want to thank everyone for their input!

To be more clear: I just want a machine that can store 400-500 movies, 100 gigs of music, play these items. I want to be able to download torrents. I need the net and that's about it...no gaming...

I really don't care what OS as long as it gets the job done with the least hassle...

Firm, I did some research on Linux last night and it appears iTunes does not yet run on Linux without an emulator and even then not very well...this is of major concern to me as I use and love my iPod...

I find this argument quite flawed. I mean, if you were talking about this before mac went into using the same processors as pc's then I would somewhat agree, but now they use intel so there's no edge there. Hard drives? Mac and pc's both support massive amounts of memory. Matter of fact the only thing that I think is different in configuring large hard drives would be the fact that pc hard drives running on xp pro must be partitioned after X tb's (not sure of the number to be honest, I could look it up if needed). Which, to be honest, I would rather have my drive partitioned anyways. 2 physical = 6 virtual for me. :shrugs: Everyone has their own preferences.

I'm sorry, but I don't think there is a new apple product on the market that is worth the money. I could go on a rant about how Steve Jobs is a professional con artist that should be put in jail for the rest of his life, but I won't do that out of respect for cali's thread.

You don't get garbage installed by the manufacturer, like on my sister's HP. That stuff pisses me off. Leave the OS alone. It already does what it's supposed to without "HP Total Care Advisor" or whatever the f*** it's called sucking up memory.
The addition of software from pc companies is annoying, there's no denying that. But, that's just one of the things that goes along with having a platform that's more popular.. there are more threats and companies are trying to ward off those threats by loading up with software. I don't agree with it at all but I kind of understand the thought process behind it I guess.

All the more reason to go Linux if you're worried about it. Wipe the drive as soon as you get it and load up the linux fun.

I do agree with what was said earlier about setting up XP, that does usually make a system run a lot better. I think the problem with pc's isn't because they are inferior in any way, it's just that for ever 1 mac there are 100 pc's so you have a lot more idiots out there doing really dumb things (downloading everything they see for example) than you do with macs.

I'm sorry, but I will never buy a mac for several reasons. The main being that you simply do not get what you are paying for in any way. The only thing that you really get over a pc when you buy a mac is bragging rights with other people that own macs, and I'm quite alright without all of that. My pc is a computer, not a flava flav clock to show off to every one.

Well I have had my Macbook Po for a little over 2 months now and while I like the "looks" of it and the style of OSX...I just don't find it practicle for me. I just can't get used to the changes from using PC so much...and I'm in school with a LOT of papers and things I use powerpoint and word processing for and the mac sucks in my opinion for that type of work. You have to use an old wiped down version of Microsoft Word and other items, and it's just something I can't get used to. Also...simple programs like AIM and Safari freeze up on me a lot, so I wouldn't say everything "just works" on the mac. One thing i also dismay is how freakin hot the bottom of this thing gets..my god. I know you arn't looking to get a lap top..from what i gather, but those are my complaints.

I honestly regret spending 2g's on this and not getting any extra satisfaction that I gathered from a PC..i'm actually thiking about selling it on ebay and going with the Dell M1330.

So why not run an emulator? I mean, I would think that iTunes could be configured in a fashion that would allow it to work well with a good emulator..

I would think that you would be able to find a flavor of linux that would work just fine with iTunes. Linux is like baskin robbins, except people haven't been able to finish counting the flavors yet. It's open source so I'm sure someone has attacked that problem already, it would just be a matter of finding it.

Just make sure you pick up plenty of virus' and spread them to your friends and family. Im not going to tell you what to buy (any idiot can waste money). Im just going to tell you that my experience with a mac has been loads better than with a pc.

Well, thanks for the comments all. I have decided that I will stay with PC for now after reading and talking to people about macs. I also really don't like the mac price tag.

I would LOVE to go Linux, but there's still not a good way to run iTunes under it, which is not acceptable for me as I have an iPod...

I think there is a version of winamp that you can use with your ipod now. Maybe that will work with linux?

Absolutely! I got some great info and Linux looks good...The only thing that sucks is no iTunes support yet...

When iTunes is sorted out I will definitely be going Linux (it can do everything else I need)

I'm going from PC to MAC and I'm very happy.
