I need help with my computer

Okay, so lately it's been hard for my computer to start up. On normal situations, I would hit the on switch, everything will start running, I hear this loud motor/fan sound and when the fan sound quiets down I hear a single BEEP and the startup processes ensues.

Lately, however, I would hit the start button, and everything starts moving like normal, but the fan sound (I'm guessing it is coming from the processor) won't quiet down and the PC won't startup. The PC makes a single long beep, then about 7 short beeps. I usually have to shut off the PC, then turn it back on until I get to the moment when it starts up normally.

I've looked into the beeping and the number of beeps is supposed to indicate the problem. At first I thought it was the graphics card or the RAM, so I took out the graphics and the RAM and sprayed the parts with compressed air, but that didn't do anything. The only other major components I have not cleaned out is the CPU...

So does anyone know what may be the problem with my machine? I've read up on sites that talk about the beeping and the closest scenario to mine is one long beep and three short beeps indicating a GPU problem. However mine does one long beep and then several short beeps, about seven. Any help to this would be appreciated.

7 beeps hmm. I would recommend changing out the proc. and see what happens. If not usually RAM is 3 beeps.

Also Compresed air will do very little if the part itself is bad

Like squid said try swapping the proc. 7 beeps on most motherboards are proc problems. If its not the proc its the motherboard itself.

are you able to check you CPU temperature? what type of graphics card u have? i have Nvidia and I am able to get it from that.

tell us ur CPU temp so maybe we can rule out if the cpu is overheating or not.

the fan is working so most likely not unless his thermal paste is GONE or old.

I don't think he can get into BIOS so that rules out the temp checking.

It would help to know what the BIOS manufacturer is or at least what make/model of computer you have.

Ok here are my specs, maybe it might help

Motherboard: Intel D915PCYL (LGA 775 socket)
CPU: Intel P4 540 3.2 Ghz
Graphics card: ATI Radeon x700Pro (PCI Express x16)
HD: 120 GB
RAM: 512 MB
Sound: Onboard

It's not like I can't turn on the PC, it just takes a few tries before the CPU fan, if I am right, slows down and the normal startup process takes place. As in, I have to keep turning it on and off until the fans cooperate. There is no problem once the PC is started up; it runs just like normal. The temperature levels are normal, idling at about 50C. I don't have thermal paste under my heatsink though.

So I am going to take out the fan and blow the processor for dust I guess. This machine is about 2 years old and I've cleaned the machine everywhere but the bottom of the processor and the heatsink, so the problem might be the dust underneath.

hmm. I am then going to say it's a mobo fault and/or a CPU pin fault. I would recommend, if you don't mind doing it, take out your motherboard and then removing the CPUHS/F then removing the CPU and seeing if there are any burned or disconfigured pins. If not then it's going to most likely be a mobo problem.

I would recommend grabbing some thermal compound too.

You're probably getting bad power from the power supply. Try swapping it before you do anything about a new CPU or MB.
