Ok I want to reinstall windows XP on my computer. I know you put the CD in and type the the cereal number and all that. But how I do delete the operating system compelty so it doesn't have anything. Then reinstall windows xp with the disc. I want to wipe out everything on my computer, no traces of any files or anything. I have all these *** viruses and figure I would wipe them out...Thanks

When you boot to the cd, you will have the option to create a new partition and format all the old data.

Insert the win xp cd and then reboot your computer. It should prompt you to hit f3 shortly after boot up sequence.

Win xp cd's will give you the option of completely deleting and reformatting your hard drive once you get through the initial loading.

If you have a pre-fab comp (IE: from dell, compaq, etc.)
I'd recommend you to follow your manufacturer's procedure on reverting your comp back to factory settings (back to the original settings).

Also, there's a tech forum for this

when u restart your computer with the XP disc, you will eventually get to options letting you know how you want to format ( quick or normal). Do a normal format. It writes 0's to the whole harddrive, then lays down all of the necessary XP software. A quick format would still eliminate the viruses and such but its better to wipe it completely with the normal format. And if you want to avoid new viruses after the reformat, make sure you have your ethernet disconnected from the network when loading XP the first time because you will want to put a virus scan on first b4 connecting to the NET. If you are on a college network and dont have a virus scan, most likely you would get about 3-5 viruses immediately

Hmm, let's see, haven't had to do this in awhile...

I believe you have to access your BIOS settings to boot from your CD-Drive. So restart the computer and keep hitting F2 (once a sec or so) until you reach your Bios settings. From there you need to change your default booting device from C:\ drive to your CD-ROM drive.

After that, put in your Windows CD in the CD-ROM drive and reboot the PC. From there it should reboot using your Windows CD and ask you if you want to modify/install Windows. If you choose to install, it should do a reformat of your hard disk clearing out everything once left in there. Hope this helps.

PS: Others feel free to correct me since it's been awhile.

I personally use a CD loaded with KillDisc, boot that, then boot the Windows CD. It zero's the whole harddrive, as a regular format does, but I'd just use them instead.

Getting to BIOS is usually a different button for every BIOS there is. My laptop is F8, while my PC is F5 or F6. Just pay attention to the prompts when you start up the computer. I made it easier of myself and made the computer boot anything in the CD before my HDD, so I just have to plop my Windows XP disc in whenever I want to reformat and such.
