Router Troubles
I have Xbox Live. When I go to test my connections, it tells me that I have a STRICT NAT. Because of this, I am not able to join any of my friends games in Halo 3.
The thing is, there are two different sets of routers in the house. The main router is downstairs in my mom's business office. My internet cable wire goes from that router to my router upstairs in my bedroom. My router then goes to my computer and the Xbox 360. So which one is the problem? The one downstairs or the one in my room? She says she has a firewall in her computer, since it's a business and she doesn't want anyone getting unneeded info. Her router is also netgear and mine is linksys. Someone help, please. |

eek, that sucks. I got a router problem with Counter Strike. It kicks me off when i am searching for servers to play. And the Halo 3 thing...when i go into the live screen on H3 it always tells me NAT is not open, but I check it on the xbox and its says open.
Try this website, it may or may-not, explain some solutions: http://www.portforward.com/ |

It totally depends on your setup. Are the routers wired or wireless?
The only thing functioning as a router should be the one downstairs connected to the cable modem. Therefore, enable NAT (Network Address Translation) on the downstairs router. Open the appropriate port to the IP Address of the XBox. Also, e60.deluxe is right, disable DHCP on the router upstairs, but that's more of a general good networking practice. If you can get online, then the two DHCP servers conflicting aren't what's causing the problem. If the upstairs router is wired, and opening the port on the downstairs router didn't fix it, then try plugging the Xbox in directly to the ethernet that comes from the downstairs router. If that fixes it, you'd be better off switching your upstairs router out for a 4-port switch. |

Here's a more interesting question (to me, at least). Why the need for a second router on the same internet connection? Seems unnecessary. I say do away with the second one all together. |

I just found out that the "router" in my room isn't a router, but a switch.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1051384141038 That one to be exact. Does it change anything? |

not really except the DHCP stuff.
still try to go directly from XBOX into router. but what is your routers model number. im looked on the microsoft support page and they say to make sure your using a compatible router. which is not making a lot of sense but whatever... |

Like the other told you only need to do two things.
1. Disable DHCP on the switch that upstairs. 2. The Nat issue can be solved by forwarding requests to specific ports in the Xbox. The ports that you need to configure are: • UDP 88 • UDP 3074 • TCP 3074 Look into the documentation of your router for information on how to do this. |

Ya, your switch shouldn't have DHCP. It probably doesn't even have it's own IP, so how would you configure it? As far as your Computer/XBOX that are connected to that switch are concerned, they are directly connected to your router.
Most likely you just have to open up the XBOX live port# on your router downstairs. I don't know what port# that is since I've never had an XBOX, but I'm sure someone here knows. If you don't know how to open port#s on your router then uhhh ... do some reading on the interweb. There is tonnes of info out there. |

You need to open up all the ports on your router and run open nat. The ports that xbox live want to use for services are blocked. That's all. It has nothing to do with DHCP. Why would it? Another option would be to enable the specific ports it wants open but that's a little more complicated than just opening them all up.
It would help to know what kind of router you have to give you a step by step.

SacrificeTheory if you want I can help you just download this tool and this other too. Send me a private message with your Instant Messaging address (MSN Messenger, AIM, Gmail) so I can chat with you and explain how to configure Hamachi. With that tool I can help you setup the Router remotely and safely.

Switches dont assign IP's via DHCP so where's the conflict? Please read the rest of the thread where the topology is explained to you. Router to switch to Xbox.
I have already explained what the problem is. Strict NAT closes all the ports you dont use until you tell it otherwise. So you introduce an Xbox which is asking for specific ports and those ports are blocked. The easy workaround is use open NAT. You dont and can't disable NAT since you have more than one device requiring an IP address. You can if you want to pay for more IP's I guess but you probably dont.

Find the IP address of the xbox by going to Network >> Edit Connection.
Open up your router interface and put that number in the DMZ, which will open all ports to the xbox. This is safe because even if someone hacked into your xbox, they can't do anything. |

I'm assuming that means true switches. Switches can work as dhcp servers easily.
ip dhcp excluded-address 10.0.13.110 10.0.13.255 ! ip dhcp pool Voice network 172.22.0.0 255.255.254.0 option 150 ip 172.22.0.20 default-router 172.22.0.1 tada merry xmas a switch working as a dhcp server. However. If forwarding xbox live ports dont work, and neither does setting it to the dmz(which makes it look like that device is plugged into the outside interface) Try turning off NAT redirect filtering in the firewall settings of the router. And don't worry about the switch in your room, its just doing layer 2 so it doesn't mater. |
