Just do your upgrade and you will be good. No change for your computer.

Yes. To me Linksys is better than D-Link. Its preference.

well im looking for a few good programs...a torrent program to manage all my bittorrents but i think i am going to go with utorrent...im also looking for a programs that will rip dvd's and then i guess i need something to burn dvd's...

with the dvd's i am trying to make sure that throught the entire process that the quality stays the same...if not somehow better...

if any of that makes any sence...

right now i have win media 11 for viewing movies and im happy with that!

im also wondering what i have to do after downloading the torrent files (music) i dont want it to stay on my desktop...i would like everything outside of my programs to go to my e drive (this is my data area)...but i first need to figure out how to get the torrent into my itunes first...

I like uTorrent 1.6.1, you can have utorrent save to whatever directory you like. then when the torrent is done just drag that music file into iTunes and it is done

yeah thats what i am doing skiz! thanks!

o by the way after the firmware upgrade i have been kicked from aim twice which has resulted in that 2 second freeze and 5 secs normal (which forces me to restart)...

i talked to my buddy that setup the comp and tomorrow he is going to get me a cisco wireless card to replace this one...hopefully that will make my connection completly solid!

Some thoughts, since you've gotten some working advice.
  • Linksys/Cisco...no matter, since Cisco is dropping the Linksys name soon.
  • The actual chipset within the device is the key, as there are a few chipset manufacturers (Marvell, Broadcom, Intel, and a couple of others) but hundreds of network card (wireless or wired) makers.
  • You may want to figure out a way to boost the signal from router, or boost the reception on your computer's end--if you can get one that has a option for an external antenna, then you can upgrade to a more powerful one.
  • It would be even better if you can have a wired connection--both for better performance and would probably give you fewer issues. Your problems all indicate several issues, the first to solve would be your wireless connectivity.
  • Maybe switch your wireless channel to another one?
  • The next would be the driver issues your computer is having--you shouldn't be freezing so much when your 'net connection is taking a dump. I'd almost bet there's a spike in CPU utilization on specific applets or drivers.
  • You've got Windows Media Player 11 installed. Ugh! That will give you some DRM related issues that were incorporated with the update. You may not have issues with something like Nero 7 or later, but if your discs are coming up unusable, you might have to back down to Nero 6 or earlier. WMP11 is not uninstallable--you'd have to re-load windows to get rid of it.

FYI, about your wireless connection. The 'G' will hit a maximum of 54Mbps. But the biggest caveat about wireless is that the max speed is *shared* among all other devices connected at the same time--5 people connected wirelessly, and that's 54 Mbps divided by 5 or an average speed someplace between 10 Mbps and 11 Mbps. This isn't considering any other dependencies in your machine to use the resources that your wireless card is trying to utilize. Another caveat for wireless would be any other interference which may reduce the signal strength, but a bigger antenna will help to fix that.

My $.02

I really like DVD Shrink for ripping DVDs, and just Nero with the DVD-Video plugin for burning them. VLC player has done the absolute best for me of all the media players I've tried (including mediaplayer classic, WMP9/10/11, iTunes, Winamp, nero showtime, etc, etc). As for your torrent issues, I'd use uTorrent and just tell it in the options->preferences->downloads dialog where to save your torrent downloads ("put downloads in" field at the top). When you've got the files where you want them on your hard drive (i.e. in your music folder, downloads, or wherever you store them), you can just drag&drop them into your iTunes library. (p.s. might want to consider the peerguardian IP blocker [www.phoenixlabs.org ] if you're concerned about your privacy online with the torrents and whatnot)
