that router does mixed mode by default(both b & g) or you can set it to b-only or g-only modes. it could be a setting with the wireless card.

sorry been outside playing with my chainsaw...
neighbor had a tree to take down.

I would put the pc next to the router to see if you still stay connected.

ENCORE WIRELESS G, PCI Land Card
I would only go with Cisco or Linksys.

Hehe, thanks... i missed that.

I would not have picked that card either. i would try a better card/ chipset for wireless. Newegg had a bunch of folks that had problems with this card. and a bunch that had good luck.

see if your buddy has a usb style to try out real quick and see if that works a bit better.

Better off with Linksys! Im not surprised with the trouble people are having. You get what you pay for.

well the wireless card wasn't my idea...i told him i needed one and thats what he got me...

after work i am going to get a cable to connect directly to the box...im thinking it will be better so from that point i am going to see what i can do about simply running the cable from comp to router (so i need my parents to ok it haha) this way i wont really have any issues and i wont have to deal with the lag that comes with wireless and gaming...

should i still download the firmware? also, is their any thing i need to change if i go from the wireless card to the cord? i can leave the wireless card in the comp just disconnect right?

i would not upgrade the firmware if your router is black and silver, but if it is the big black one UPGRADE it. if your good with the CAT5 cable directly to the router that is going to give you the best speed period.

You would have to check the firmware. You can do ipconfig and check the ip for the router. Log in and check it that way.

you can do it from either one...

1) download the 45.160.27 version and save the M1424WR.rmt file on your desktop
2) log into your router and goto ADVANCED--> Firmware Upgrade --> from computer(scroll down)... browse for file M1424WR.rmt file on your desktop, the router will ask you if your sure... click apply and wait 2 minutes(or less).

it will reboot and you'll be good to go.

what color is the login screen? older firwmware is blue login newer ones are red and branded with Verizon. By default use the username/password combo

admin
password

or

admin
password1

these ARE case-sensitive, if either of these do not work. There is a little red reset button near the WAN connection. press and hold it for 30 seconds and all settings will be reset back to factory. your default wireless and WEP key is on a sticker on the bottom of your router

then the username/ password will be

admin
password

after you login it will want you to change the password it requires at least 1 number and 1 letter , 6 charater minimum i think.

good luck
