Verizon uses a different system than Cingular, At&t, and T-mobile. I believe they use something called CDMA (or something along those lines) while the other phones use SIM cards.

As for the iPhone, it looks like a very neat product. Anything that comes out of Apple will be easy to use. But it will be very expensive. The price might not go down on the next version, but you will get more bang for your buck.

You can also be assured that they will be hacked Linux + iPod =
Guess it varies by area. I've used pretty much all carriers with the exception of Sprint and Nextel. T-Mobile, Cingular, and AT&T all had problems with too many dropped calls, poor reception, or the recording of "all circuits are busy. Please try your call later." Also, AT&T uses an outdated internet service unlike Sprint and Verizon which are on average twice as fast.

Verizon gets the best reception in my area (So. Cal desert region) and it's what I use with my workers. In all I have 7 phone lines with them.

im not getting one but one of my friends can get it for me for like 300 bucks, the required phone plans are to expensive for the phone and i heard to many negatives about it.
-2.0 megapixel camera. cmon for 600 dollars i better get a better camera on it
-its not made to play games on it. i need this feature when im bored in a waiting room
-typing text or phones is supposed to be difficult
-to many steps just to dial a phone number
-no voice dialing
-no upgradable memory
-after about 300 charges you gotta send your phone to apple for a new battery and for a fee

<-- Cingular 8525 w/ 4gb card

Looks its an iPhone with a real OS that truly supports 3rd party apps, real connectivity with MS software, oh... yeah and it has 3G.

iPhone sucks. Just another way to line the pockets of Mr. Jobs.

Early critiques of the iPhone (from mobileburn.com)

And then there is the text input. It is very tricky to use, though I can see how it will likely get less troublesome after some real practice. I'm also a bit worried about the durability of the rear cover of the device.
...
The kicker, however, is the call audio quality. It is bad. Really bad. We'll have to test it out tomorrow in a stronger signal area, but so far it would rate with some of the worst phones I have tested in the past two years when it comes to the call audio quality heard by the iPhone user.

The phone, all in all is really a great concept. I am sure we will see alot of copy cats out there in the next few years. I will be waiting personally for the intial "flood" to calm down and any bugs to be worked out.

And I have been with AT&T/cingular for years and only had a few dropped calls in that time, i think they have great service and they are the largest network in the US...ftw!

Interesting thing about the touchscreen - it senses the heat from your fingertips, so ladies - no tapping with your nails because it doesn't sense pressure/electrostatic current.

Sweet, Cyber! I knew you'd buy one... you've been raving about it for months! Let us know what your impressions are.

btw touch screen on the iphone is not new, lg chocolate and samsung e900 both have this but its only for the buttons whereas the iphone is basically all touchscreen.

iphone is overrated.. im a dealer for all carriers except verizon and all i hear lately is "do you have the iphone? do you have the iphone?.." its retarded and its still running on edge not evdo.. almost everyone who raves about the iphone are like lemmings.

There's no way I'm getting an iphone, I think they're rip offs. No external battery so if it dies, you're screwed.. the text input is being ripped, the screen is supposedly easily damaged, no 3rd party software, the internet connection is barely better than 56k (which is really retarded since you're supposed to be able to download music onto it from the internet), you have to pay for features to be unlocked (that's the one that really pisses me off).

To me having to pay for features on something you already paid $600 for to be unlocked is just plain ridiculous. It's like this: What if you si owners got your car home just to find out you had to pay extra for your vtec? You would hate your car, and honda would go down in flames.

[edit] For the touchscreen thing, my palm treo 700p has a touchscreen that works perfectly. It may not look near as good as the iphone, but it's far more functional. I have an external keyboard (instead of only being able to use the screen) which is a huge +1 to me. Also, I have broadband internet connection, external memory, 3rd party software (including mp3 playing software, which I don't need since an mp3 playing program came on the phone), all my features worked without extra $$$, etc. etc..

I honestly thought about getting an iphone when they were saying that you could get a year and a half of free service with purchase, but decided against it because 1) I don't like cingular all that much and 2) I do like my phone a lot more.

No offense to anyone that has picked one up (or plans on it), but I think this is just another way for apple to make an assload of money off of fanbois. If it's shiny and has i before the name, people will buy it.

Hey Cyber - any truth to these comments from an iPhone owner?

2. There is no file browser on the device at all. Data must be organized (if at all) in the appropriate application.
3. The camera is a simple application that has ONE button: the shutter. Pictures come out okay on the device, but nothing too fancy on a monitor, especially if it was an attempt at a macro shot.
4. SIM card is damn near impossible to open, if at all. I didn't look into it extensively.
5. Web browser is slow, even over WLAN. Even the simple OneList web app that was created takes around 20 seconds to load over WLAN. You can not highlight, cut, copy, or paste and text from a website, and you can not save any images you find from a website either. The only nice thing about it is the tabbed browsing, which crashed on me when I went to Engadget and YouTube on two tabs. This is the only application that allows you to use the keyboard in landscape mode.
6. The keyboard sucks. It gets slightly better after the iPhone "learns" you, as the employees said, but even then, it's not a device you can use with one hand comfortably, much less without looking.
7. You can only send one picture at a time in an email.
8. No custom ringtones (yet, as we were being told) and the alert tones can not be changed whatsoever.
9. The default ringtones are incredibly lame.
10. The only form of customization outside of a lame default ringtone is the wallpaper, which you'll only see when you need to unlock the device or when you get a phone call.
11. "Picture pinching" or using two fingers to zoom on any content is certainly fun to play with, but not practical whatsoever. This operation depends solely on using the device with two hands.
12. No document editor or native viewer. You can not store documents on the device to be viewed, they can only be viewed as attachments when they're sent to your in an email.
13. Visual voicemail is laggy and reacts about the same way as pushing the fast forward and rewind buttons on traditional voicemail systems. The only advantage is for those that get that many voicemail messages a day that they need to sort them according to priority.
14. NO games. None.
15. No voice dialing.
16. No speed dialing (which can be made up by the "quick list", but getting to that quick list isn't as fast as holding a single key on a real keypad).
17. No video.
18. No MMS.
19. It's still <4GB for $500 and <8GB for $600
20. It only takes around 2 hours to explore every menu without any options for expandability except to scrounge around for new web apps that will load slowly and nowhere near as smoothly as the native apps.

This device looks like it was aimed at the general consumer who has the money to spend on such a flashy device, but it leaves so many basic features behind that it's almost impossible to consider it a success as a mainstream device. It encourages the advanced user to move away from MMS and into email to send images, but leaves out any advanced features advanced users would be accustomed to, and still retains a huge price tag on top of it.

It's certainly pretty and Americans will buy it because of that simple UI, but anyone who's familiar with other operating systems would be appalled. This phone needs to be unlocked and cracked WIDE open to make much better use of the multi-touch system. That, or it needs an immediate update in iTunes to rework every feature.
