And what am I wrong about the wifi with? I'm not sure what I said about it that was wrong.

As for the lag, I'm more talking about the lag between opening programs, clicking on stuff, etc etc. It was just annoying.

And yeah, I meant more of a picture stabalizer than autofocus, my bad. With the dar that I was using, it was very easy to take a picture and have it come out crisp. With the iphone, the lighting made every picture have a hazy orange look and they were usually a bit blurry.
well you said the internet only worked with the wifi, which is extremely untrue. It works on just a phone signal as well.

Yes, sometimes there is some lag in opening programs.

for people surfing on the 3G network, how is it? what speed would you say its equivalent to? i know for a fact that the EGDE network for us first gen users is pretty dissapointing...slower than 56k IMO....

The keyboard - it doesn't go into landscape mode when texting? Was my friend just doing something wrong or is this intended? If so, that's a huuuuge design flaw.

Camera - is there no autofocus or anything? It took terrible pictures, which I wasn't expecting since people generally say it's a decent camera

Lag - is there a firmware update coming? It seemed to lag a lot when choosing between certain things.

And the worst imo.. no internet w/out wifi? Is that for real? That is the main, 100% absolute thing I want in a new phone - the ability to surf the net when I'm not in a building w/ my laptop or something. Does this thing really not work w/out wifi? Are all phones like this?!! I thought for certain that was the point of having a broswer on the phone, I suppose I was wrong.

Anyway, feel free to comment and tell me if I was doing something wrong. I left the phone disappointed.

1. There is no horizontal texting becuase it would be extremely annoying if the accelerometer kept trying keep up with your hand rotation during a text. It can get annoying just surfing. That's why the desktop does not rotate either. A simple option to on/off would be nice, but it's better utilized just for full screen video and web browsing to maintain accurate screen size ratio.

2. If there is no 3G network or wi-fi available, it should transfer to the Edge network. This is a fact. Nothing to debate... (see bottom)

3. There is some lag in the iPhone, there always has been... it's .25 inch computer running totally on RAM. C'mon.

4. The 2.0 Megapixel built-in camera does have auto-focus, but again... what are you comparing these phone pics to? A stand-alone digi-cam? again... c'mon. I have no issues with the quality of pics versus your average cell phone pic... hell, I use them to dump stuff on ebay. No issues... Oh yeah, the lens has to be kept clean but that's normal.

5. If there is better all-in-one package on the market for a similar price... Please share!

More wireless. Less space.

iPhone 3G delivers UMTS, HSDPA, GSM, Wi-Fi, EDGE, GPS, and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR in one compact device — using only two antennas. Clever iPhone engineering integrates those antennas into a few unexpected places: the metal ring around the camera, the audio jack, the metal screen bezel, and the iPhone circuitry itself. And intelligent iPhone power management technology gives you up to 5 hours of talk time over 3G networks. That’s some of the best in the business.

How is the battery holding up for 3G folks that had the 2G first?

Apparently it isn't extremely untrue because my friend's phone was not working without wifi. A screen even came up saying that there was no local wifi and the page wouldn't load.

1) Why would you keep rotating the thing while you were texting? When I text, I like to send big texts (300+ characters sometimes) and it'd be nice to do it on the full keyboard instead of that small, cramped one. It simply doesn't make sense, but I'm going to assuume Apple is smart enough to include that in a firmware update.

2) Apparently it is something to debate. As I said above, my friend's did not work. At all. Nothing. Nada.

3) I played with the Dare and there was zero lag...

4) Honestly, I think my 1.3 MP cam on my crappy phone now takes better pics. With the iphone, I felt like it kept trying to balance out the light and they kept coming out orangey and grainy. Not to mention, it's hard as hell to take like a pic of yourself since you can't feel the button (it should just let you tap anywhere on the screen to take the pic). They also all come out very blurry unless you're verrrry steady. No flash.. is there a camcorder on there (genuinely don't know, not trying to be a smartass)? I just felt like it was very lacking (for a phone that's supposed to be 'revolutionary')

5) LG Dare. I keep switching back and forth on my stance for this phone, but it is definitely competitive. Same price (199.99), better carrier (verizon, which > all imo), and lots of nicer features. I will admit, the iphone is much sleeker and in some ways more fun to play with (touch screen > dare's screen). However, the Dare has a 3.2 mp cam that takes very sharp pics, even in the darkness. It has Flash.. you can take panaromic pics (3 pictures, and then it lines then up to create a very wide shot). Camcorder that can record at 120 fps and play back in slomo.. It's pretty gimicky, a lot like the Iphone. The main reason I don't like the Dare is because it's not as 'fluid' as the iphone, where you can sling your finger down the screen and it'll keep scrolling, something the Dare fails to do. On top of all that, it's on a faster network.

Anyways, not trying to derail with the Dare. I just thought the Iphone was lacking. Considering this is V2 of the Iiphone, it should kick ass, but it doesn't. It's just missing a lot of little, obvious thing.

I'm not really sure. He told me his plan is like $68 a month total. His mom works at the Mayo Clinic so you get a pretty decent discount for that.

If not that, I really don't know. Once I wiped mine, it didn't show any phone numbers.

I held the 3G today at ATT. Honestly, I won't be getting rid of my 2G iPhone. I really didn't like how 'slick' and 'thick' it really was compared to my current phone. I really like how thin the one I have is. Its not really a deal-breaker, but it did feel different. (btw: my roommate just left to ATT to purchase a 3G. They don't have any in stock, so he's gotta order it and wait.)

try replacing the sim card.

for the person who is all on the dare bandwagon, kick question being since i know nothing about the dare. does it display an actual regular webpage or the mobile? also, how is the verizon network any faster than a 3g network? i though 3g was the fastest data network out????

My point is that the accelerometer is pretty damned sensitive. If your not in a normal straight up/down position, it can read your movements as a rotation and then you have to be still for a moment so it'll settle. This would get really annoying when your typing a text and even moreso with texts as long as you describe. Imagine a business person dealing with such a thing... you might appear quite silly in a conference room. Believe me, I know... hehe...

As for the typing, you get more used to it than a playstation controller. I type so fast it typically draws comments from those watching. I learned to turn the key stroke "click" off soon after my powers grew...lol.

Not sure why you're buddy's phone is working improperly or if it's a coverage/data plan thing. Irregardless, he's not getting the service or functionality that the phone is capable of.

Besides that, I'm not familiar with the Dare. I'll be sure to check it out... but for some things in this life, there is no substitute. The iPhone just happens to be one of them... Similar to the item in your avatar.
