It's probably from your hard drive is not being detected because it is bad or has become unseated from the cable. Most likely you have a bad (Broken hard drive). It could also be several other things but they are rare. Get a new hard drive installed, cheaper to do it yourself. 2 screws, 1 cable, 1 power connector. Is this a desktop or laptop? Were you reinstalling xp or is this an initial install. The more details the better. What model computer? IN that nox with the 4 messages, is there no partition information like a drive letter or is that everything thats in the box?

Ok so it was working until you removed the CD Rom drive. It could be that you need to redetect your Hard Drive in BIOS. BIOS is the setup program that runs when you first turn the computer on. It will say press f2 or DEL or F1, etc to enter setup. They are all different so there is no step by step way to tell you how. If you get into this setup program and fish around and look for IDE devices or Hard disk or something of that nature and see if there is an option for autodetect. This is dependant also on who makes the BIOS and how old this machine is.

OR if you took the ribbon cable of the CD ROM and disconnected it from the HD as well. Most of the time the daisy chain these devices to one cable. If you reconnected the cable and put the connector on upside down or you failed to reconnected the power cable to the back of the drive it would not detect. Did you mess with the ribbon cable.

If doesn't work or there is no such option then I would DEFINITELY say your hard Drive is Done. Its probably a few years old right? Luckily hard drives are easy to replace. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&Sku=THD-250A2

This should be what you need. The bigger it is, the more stuff you can store on it. ie 250GB < 500GB. If you install a new HD and it still doesn't work then there is a more serious issue. It doesn't hurt to have more than one hard drive. Just extra storage for movies and stuff.

Tell me your model name HP what? Pavilion what? and i can get you more details on what specifications you should get.

You might have to install a driver when the Setup first starts. Check around and see if you have a disk with IDE/SATA drivers. If you do, when you start up Setup, at the bottom it will say "Press F6 if you need to install a third-party driver", hit F6 and it'll ask you for the disk.

I thought about that but it's very rare that you have to do that. But still, I don't really know what kind of computer he has to tell him.

By looking at your pics its all hooked up right. You need to buy a new hard drive. You can try one last time to reseat the gray ribbon cable in both the hard drive and motherboard. By reseat I mean pull it out and put it back in. Then try to reinstall windows. If it doesn't detect your disks buy a new hard drive. the smaller ones are only like 50 bucks. Good luck! I'll try to help if you keep me posted. Sorry I took so long to reply, had to make a store run.

Oh crap you have a sata drive. Do you have a driver disk like silicon said? If so you can try that. I cant tell if you have more than one but that thick red cable with the black connector connected to the silver thing in the bottom of the carriaqe leads to your hard drive. The silver rectangular thing.

I've heard people tell me it's rare, but I have to do it. Even slipstreamed SP2 into my install CD and I still have to do it. If I don't, Setup reports "No storage device detected".

it is good ol SATA. i still dont see a power connector, SATA or Molex. SATA connectors are typically black so it may be hard to spot, but i still dont see one.

also check tightness of the thin red cable coming from the hard disk, SATA connectors are notorious for coming loose easily. esp in the cheaper quality cables.

That sata connecor and the sata power. Besides being careful around those connectors, as their definitely fragile compared to the molex connector for power or the PATA connector similar to the ones in your CD drive; I would recommend either carefully using a zip tie around the connectors or adding a dot from a hot glue gun to give the sata connectors added support for each other.

Oh, and maybe clean up the wiring a bit. Followed by a couple of blasts from a can of compressed air on that heat sink/fan over your CPU.

My $.02
