Wireless Router terms/benefits. Explain please.

I’m looking to buy a router. It’s purpose is to allow wireless access to my laptop throughout the house, and wired access (possibly wireless in the future) to my desktop. I do heavy downloading of larger files on occasion.

I’m looking at this WRT54GL from LinkSys. I know some say Linksys sucks, but from what I’ve read this router is very very good. Also, the problem with the others dropping out doesn’t seem to be here, and rather with the “G” & “GS” series, and only version 5 & 6 of those. I’m baffled by all this “HyperWRT” and “dd-wrt” talk. Also, many reviews say the best thing about this router is the ability to flash it with better firmware. I’ve done some looking around already, but would like some “laymens” terms here.

I’m usually pretty quick to figure stuff out hands on, I just need an idea of the benefits here. I’m pretty much zeroed in on this router anyway, though.

Link to router.

Edit: I've actually had experience with 2 linksys routers myself and haven't had much trouble. However, I don't recall the model #s.

I'm using the WRT54GS and it's a great router. I've also owned a few WRT54Gs and I've never kept the stock firmware on these. I'm currently using DD-WRT on my box and the customization of this firmware is endless. I'm not too update to date on the new boxes that Linksys has released but http://www.linksysinfo.org is a great resource on flashing your Linksys box with some open-source firmware.

What I'm asking, is what is the benefit of flashing here? I've used 2 different routers but never seen anything about flashing them and "dd-wrt", etc.

I'm currently using this router as well. No problems whatsoever, easy to hook up and easy to set up protection. It sits in the basement and I get full signal on the back deck and on the top floor bedroom. A+++++

There's a good read of how it all started. The router is far more capable of what the Linksys stock firmware can handle. With an open source Samba system, you can multimanage multiple things on these little boxes like VPN servers, VoIP etc. The stability is far greater on firmwares such as DD-WRT than the stock as well.

Edit: I love what DD-WRT allows me to do. The interface allows me to track every connection on the router.

lol...man, I just drive my car. I don't worry about performance unless the warning light comes on.

Come into ICE and we can talk about stereos. That's all I know.
