so im down to two cameras

Chosing betwen the Nikon D80 and the Canon 30D. I mean the D200 is only $300 more than the 30D but the 30 is pretty cool. Its 2x as fast for shutter speeds -1/8000 vs 1/4000 on the XTI and the D80, and its 5 frames/second on burst as is the D200, while the others are 3fps.

But does anyone know what that roughly translates to mph/kmph? '

I guess for the burst at 5 you would get 1/5 = .2 of a second vs 0.33 of a second for 3 shots. How fast can you capture something in "still" detail?

Also for the 1/8000 vs 1/4000. Thanks!

The other factors are the D80 is a lot ligther, cheaper and the lenses are better + cheaper. So its a serious contender. But the 30D is just so fast!

The 30D weighs in at 27 oz, while the stabalized 70-300 lens weighs another 22 oz making it pretty hefty. :P

With a fast burst, you're going to need a fast memory card. That max burst speed likely with a manual setting with large/basic jpg setting. That 1/8000 shutter speed is useless (coming from a casual photographer's viewpoint) because your shots are likely to come out dark, unless you're in a really bright setting.

Anyhow, sounds like you're leaning toward the Canon, so just for it!

I have a 20D (30D predecessor) I am not sure what they have changed, not much. But, I LOVE MINE!!!!!!!!!!! It is great. The only thing that I don't like is that the 30D made the price of the 20D go down like $1000 dollars. I have not played with the Nikon DSLRs much, but I definitely prefer my Canon, from what I have seen.

Its for personal use. I will be getting a high speed CF or SD card 4GB in size for it.

do u plan on sticking to kit lens? or buying body only then hand picking ur own lens? I think both Canons and Nikon lenses are very good that its a matter of price preference and brand loyalty

I recommend going on www.flickr.com and search "d200" and "30d"
most ppl there post what kinda lenses they use so that way you'll have a better idea of the different combinations (of lens + body) that can be had with both cams

I think im confused now.. lol kept thinking u want the D200 lol

Canon 30D by a long shot. I was going to get the 20Da because I found it at a good price. I'm not spending the extra $$$ for the 30D. XTI here I come. Get the 30D.... you won't regret it. My sister got one for her business and she loves it. Oh and on a last thought, I love Canon's lenses. No one in my family has ever complained about them not being up to par. We're biased. I have a Canon family.

The lenses I'm gonna get first

1) a 70-300mm zoom (prob with auto stability)
2) a macro lens (60mm or closer)
3) wide angle lens

I don't think I'm going to print larger than 8x11 but I would like the lens to be on par with the camera so to speak so as not to lose much detail.

teh 1/8000 is not terribly important. using an NDF should fix any problems you may run in to.

dont worry about the body. worry about the lens first, pick canon or nikon, Then pick the body. it should never come down to ___ Nikon body vs. ____ Canon body. it should come to nikon vs. nikon or canon vs. canon After you pick which lens catalog you like better.

went through the same issue when i was picking out a camera... hard time choosing between a nikon d50 and canon xti. the nikon imo was a little easier to use than the canon, and the nikon felt more comfortable to hold compared to the small grip on the canon.

i voted for the d80...

^^ ur right, but the 30D and D80 are similar in size, so size and grip shouldnt matter much

wing, I think you should go for the Canon, you will find yourself enjoying the glasses out there USM FTW!

My mom thinks the D80 at 1/4000 is fast enough for intents and purposes. She's got a D200 which is as fast or faster than the 30D but doesn't use that (only portraits).

unless your gonna shoot something thats going like 200mph without a flash, its not gonna matter.

if your really worried about it, the D70s does 1/8000.

Nikon's Nikkor lenses have a USM (ultrasonic motor)equivalent. Nikkor calls it SWM (silent wave motor). Sigma also has this feature in some of their lenses called HSM (hypersonic motor).

Here's an interesting Canon lens FAQ which also includes an FAQ on general photography stuff: http://photonotes.org/articles/beginner-faq/lenses.html

For all things Nikon, I suggest reading up on Ken Rockwell's site (http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon) or Thom Hogan's site (http://www.bythom.com/nikon).

As I've said before, I think you'll like the Canon very much. But also remember to go to a camera store and play with their display models before you make your decision on which to buy. A store visit definitely helped me in my decision to go with the Nikon D40.

Yeah I was at the store for an hour today. It was good but I couldn't keep any pics since I don't have an SD card
(well and I forgot to bring my CF too )

The other parts I liked about Nikon were what the lady said was longer batt life, and I do like the screen protector over the LCD.
