To put it simply, you cannot do this. The socket type is different along with other things (no need for detail here it just will not work).

EDIT:
I just re-read the post and if his "pavilion" is a desktop computer then he can change out the motherboard and CPU(probably RAM as well) but this would not be worth the cost at all. Besides, AMD's are good chips, he probably bought it when they were on top of the game anyways. Trying not to let my AMD fanboy show-through too much here, lol.

If it makes a differance Dell does not take online payments (unless it has changed in the last year) I got a Dell card and bought a laptop to later find out that I couldnt pay online. That was the first and last thing i bought from them.

The only problem I have with the macbook is that I've heard that OS isnt compatible with a lot of programs but Vista is. Im not quite sure how true that is but its just something ive read in a few places on the internet.

Hello,

Thoughts about the dell: Dell makes a decent computer for the money. Especially when you are a reseller (which I am) we can usually get the model you listed for around 650-750. IF you get the laptop for that range, then there is no better choice then dell. If you are going to spend 1000-1300, then do consider the Macbook. Why?

1. The New Macbooks are intel based and can run BOTH xp (via bootcamp) and OSX. You can also run both OS's at the same time via "Parallels" This is virtualizaiton, NOT emulation. Meaning that the os runs at near native speed. Also, the software allows you to launch windows programs from your "dock" and never even see the os start.

2. The is not a computer on the market (within reason) which can compare to the build quality of the mac. Why? Because Apple designs all their products from start to finish. This limits them in what 3rd party developers can offer, but is the main reason why macs feel so integrated.

3. Macbooks are a great deal for the money. They come standard with the Core 2 Duo, 512-1gb of ram (save yourself some money and by the ram online! You'll save a few hundred right there) As well as a slot loading DVD burner, Sharp Screen clarity, isight webcam built in and a nifty remote for controlling frontrow (OSX version of media center)

4. If you are a student, know a student or are the father of a student (just the student part) you can receive a 100-300 discount off of the macbook right off the bat. Just go to the apple site and click on educational link, then select your school, then it will take you to a discount page (prices will be as listed).

5. Flexibility: With rock-solid hardware, the ability to run multiple os's (Your mouth will drop when you see osx 10.5 which comes out this fall) and a resale value which is 3x of the dells, you can upgrade later and not lost too much money. I just sold my 12'' g4 powerbook for 850 which was 3 years old. Try doing that with any pc.

Ease of use: I have 12 pc's personally which range from servers to tablets which serve as test boxes for the custom applications we develop. I also have 4 macs (17'' powerbook, 17'' macbook pro, 13'' macbook (black) and the new 8 core macpro for video editing). Number of times the pcs have froze in the last year, over 2000. Number of times the Macs have froze: 2.

OSx is based on linux which is wayyy more stable then any windows nt based pc (nt,200,xp,vista). If you want an os which is rocksolid and still have the ability to run windows apps when you need them, then get the macbook.

If you are spending the money, why not get more features for the same price? IF you search online you will even see people who bought the macbook and JUST run XP on it. That is how good the hardware is. Its your choice.

If you have any questions, or would like to chat, you can reach me at psebern@solutionsdelivered.net

Thank you.

I have an HP that I love. I wanted an AMD processor, and I was not to worried about portability. I wanted the Macbook, but it was just out of my price range for the same stuff. Plus I would have to by a new version of photoshop, so that definitly pushed it out of range. But if you can I would go with the Macbook.

I have the mac book pro and know alot of people with the mac book. I have worked very closely with both and love them both. On my mbp I run windows vista via bootcamp. So you will never have any incompatibilities. Thats just what I think, I would choose the Mac book. My mom owns a dell and I can't stand that thing. Macs are the only computer I will use from here on out.
