I don't own a PS3 (I have a Wii360, though), but I will say that this is what the PS3 community needs. I'm sure that HOME is going to be the thing that will attract more folks to the PS3 (if and when people start to get over the high price point). My only worry is that it won't be implemented well. PS3 does need it's online components, seeing as how Virtua Fighter 5 and Virtua Tennis 3 for PS3 don't have online capabilities and the 360 does. Hopefully Sony has come up with a competitor for XBL.

the only real reason i got a ps3 was so i could play final fantasy when it comes out... but the sad part is its just been sitting around and not being played. resistance was a cool game, but the multiplayer sucked and i got bored of it after a couple days. most of the games that used to be just exclusive to sony, but it seems that microsoft is buying out the rights to a lot of the games anyway.
long story short, i bought a ps3.. spent just over 900$ after tax on everything (3 games, extra controller, hdmi cable) and am regretting it very much. i played my friends 360 for the first time and was immediately drawn to it. more games that come out at a faster pace etc. multiplayer is 100x better. 50$ subscription fee per year to xbox live, but its worth it. this will ensure they maintain the servers and keep individual games patched (not just the system). home looks like ps3 is just making a shabby attempt at creating a sort of new appeal... servers that are going to carry that much information are going to be hard to maintain... especially without a subscription fee. i already bought an xbox 360 and my ps3 goes up on ebay tomorrow! if you still want a ps3 buy mine :] |

Very similar to the Sims online unfortunately. While I do like Xbox Live (as far as the system, not always the people) this is a novel concept as an alternate way of representing their online community instead of just nicknames and menus. Though I see this as more of a gimmick. As I said it is similar to the Sims online, which might make it too much like a normal game (and people get bored with games.) The idea of building my own "virtual crib" and inviting my console friends over and playing my music that they can hear is kind of fun but I don't think I'd get a whole lot of use out of it before it got old.
If this could be active while a game is running, it would make for a much more interesting alternative to the traditional lobby. If they can implement it in such a fashion that it is useful in very general applications while not having significant drawbacks (as opposed to a more traditional setup like Live) then it might be something. It will be interesting to see whether it flops or not, but my personal outlook isn't too great judging from what I have seen. For most of the applications they mentioned, using a menu to get where/what you want would be more effective. Personally I'd like to see it implemented well and become a hit. Can anyone say Snow Crash? Oh yeah, and no caps threat titles please. |

IMNSHO, I think the thought and overall arrogance of Ken Kutaragi has been a serious downfall to Sony and the PS3. The PS3 has many merits, but the irresponsible and blatant belief without consideration of the general gaming populace blindly buying the PS3 has done more damage than good.

High expectations + hubris = a no win situation for both gamers/consumers and Sony alike. The PS3 may have technology that looks good on paper, but the high cost of creating a PS3 game is forcing many developers and producers to bring the games out on the Xbox360 and the Wii, in addition to the PS3. The exclusive game hits would have given the PS3 a major push, but, the current Sony short-sightedness has done quite the opposite. The PS3's online effort may look and work well, but without the content and the audience, developers will be hesitant to create for a media outlet that has limited profit potential. Unless this direction reverses, I personally can't agree with the topic of the OP. Sidenote: the PC is still the most versatile and largest gaming unit ever...just think of the more than 8.5 million peeps playing WoW and paying $10-$15 a month...that total alone is worth more than the consoles combined average. YMMV |
