Getting an iBook......advice?

So I'm pretty sure I'm getting an iBook soon (Legally Blonde except blue). I'm keeping my MUCH more powerful Compaq laptop. Just wondering what I should do with the iBook? I think I'm getting Mac OS 8........but should I be looking for a newer operating system, and can it handle a newer operating system?

I basically know nothing about Macs except that I hated using them in grade school

I'm sorry, but that's TERRIBLE advice......unless you're willing to trade your Macbook straight up for this iBook :)

I have no clue why anyone would need a powerful Mac.....not like you can play games on it anyways.

The iBook meets the minimum requirements in order to run Tiger. You'll have to stack the RAM in order to do anything though.

Why do you guys even consider macs? I still don't get it unless it's just to rebell against Microsoft.

Try one! It's perfect for what I need to do... PS CS2. I don't really use it for games, thats what the PS3 is for...

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with an open mind. But really, because they are smoother, more reliable, make much more sense, and are just all-around better computers.

Or in my case.........because it's FREE. I'm just going to use it as a basic application computer..........MAYBE I'll load office on and take it to class just to be weird

What do you mean about 'stacking' the ram? Does that involve a ram upgrade........or is that a software thing, I've never heard of that term before? I'm not interested in upgrading it.......cuz if I have to upgrade it, I might as well just toss it in the garbage can.

Holy running-with-blinders Batman!

To be truly technologically open minded, would be to understand the advantages and disadvantages of *any* platform/software/hardware combination, and then use what is the best solution for a specific solution; while ignoring subjective biasness when it's not applicable. Meh.

Back on topic, when wondering what you can do with an iBook, what are things that you sometimes do when you wish you had more than one computer to do it with? Maybe you were thinking you wanted to worked with video or graphics while you're doing work on your Compaq?

Also, adding RAM wouldn't be a bad idea, upgrading the OS may return slower performance than what you're expecting.

Check here first to see what type of RAM you need, how much and what the cost might be? (There's always somewhere else that might have it cheaper)

I recommended adding RAM if you're planning on installing OS 10.

I just wouldn't be comfortable being incompatible with 95% of the software out there. I'm a consultant programmer and had the opportunity to work with them for a couple of weeks (interfacing them to a Win2000 server with 3rd party ODBC). It's a fine machine and you gotta love the desktop animation but just seems too limited.

Honestly, I don't think it's powerful enough to do anything useful with video or graphics. I'm using Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 on my Compaq at the moment for graphics, and I don't do any video work. It's just a spare laptop for if a friend comes over or something.

Woot.........I think it has 32MB of RAM My Compaq has 1.25GB.

Does wireless networking work as they say in the Mac commercials "Right out of the box"? or do I need to get a wireless USB stick? And if I DO need a wireless card upgrade........will that work with a windows based PC or is it proprietory Mac?

Just making it clear that this is the one I'm getting:

I'm gonna agree that it's too limited.......I have Office 2007 for my Compaq, and I'm not in a hurry to go buy a Mac compatible version of the thing.

Huh...

I've typically used older hardware to be:
* Print/file server
* Firewall
* Game server
* Mail server
* Terminal to another server or system (using a citrix client or remote desktop)

But, the spare laptop for visiting friend's sounds o.k. if they need to keep up with their e-mail and web surf.

My $.02
