So many people want to see Vista fail so they can't point at it and say "See I told you microsoft sucks!".

/yawn

I've been running the RTM Ultimate version since december and my only issues were with beta sound card drivers being buggy.

The benefits aren't glaring in your face, but there are enough little things that make going back to xp a little tough. There were a bunch of things that pissed me off when I first installed it, but after some customization I got everything the way I like it. One of the 'piss me off' things WAS the customization, since they completely shuffled the control panel and just about all the configuration utilities. But I got used to it after some tinkering.

As was already said in this thread ... Office 2k7 is a MUCH bigger deal then vista. Word and Excel 2k7 are very very nice ... and powerpoint too!

I'd say that upgrading from Xp isn't necessary for 90% of PC users (including business) .. but rather just get it when it comes with a new PC. At least for now.

It really does get old hearing that non-stop from every mac user. It's just like the people that think that their vw gti is the best car in the world and hate on everything else.. until they buy an evo and that's the best car in the world.

To me apple is overpriced and overhyped..

I'm sorry, but I am really sick and tired of seeing and hearing the Apple folks think they're better than everyone else.

I think it's quite pathetic for Apple to give 10 reasons to switch to OSX in the first place. Microsoft doesn't do that; why should they? I think it's desperation.

Ok, so OSX is better than Windows... big deal. That's subjective anyways. I still believe in "power in numbers"; that's how nature operates. It's so annoying how I always hear "Apple is better at this", "Apple is better than that".

Yeah, so the iPod was a big hit when it first came out. Now it's being trampled by more sophisticated, more stylish, and more affordable devices. Dare I predict that this will happen to the iPhone too? Oh, did I just use a Cisco System trademark? Apple oversight FTL.

Anyways, I'm not hating on Mac users or the thread starter. I'm just venting my feelings at Apple's marketing strategy.

apple lovers can say what they want, they only have a 10% share of the market.

I've owned a legit version of the RTM version of Vista since the end of November and it's been great to me. The RTM version is not comparable to the beta or release candidates. Those RCs have a code debugger in them that takes up a fair bit of resources, so things will run smoother in the RTM version than the public releases.

There are however, a few downfalls to Vista:
1) The 64-bit version is lacking a large support of drivers and applications i.e. Adobe Flash won't even install on the 64-bit IE
2) The 32-bit version is limited to 3 gigabytes of ram. You'll be forced to buy the 64-bit version if you plan to exceed 3 gigabytes.

As with all of my OS progressions (95, 98, 2K, XP) I will move when the first major service pack is released. I prefer to not be the extended beta tester for Microsoft to work out bugs that were not found before release. Even when I move it will probably only be one box at a time (5 in the house: Gaming PC, HTPC, 'Family' PC, Office PC, Laptop)

Just over 2% global and under 4% in the U.S. If you believe all the commercials, "switchers" and the media hype, you would think that it's a lot more, which is what Apple would like you to believe.

Apple missed the boat by not licensing their (better) OS. When I can build myself a pretty nice dual-core Windows computer for a bit over $1000, I see no need to pay for an overpriced Mac with fewer software choices, albeit one that runs more smoothly.

I didn't see anyone address this issue, so I figured I'd try my best to explain it. One thing to note about Windows Vista, it is the ONLY OS capable of running DirectX 10. DirectX10 is not backwards compatible with XP or any Mac OS's, since it is a Microsoft generated product.

What does this all mean?

Well games are still being written in DirectX9, so its not that big of a deal... yet. (DirectX9 games will still play on Vista) But when the games switch to directX10, you won't be able to play them on anything but Vista. Unless the programmer releases two versions of the game, or somehow makes it so the game can at least play in DirectX9, with limited capabilities.

What about the video cards?

So far Nvidia has been the only company to release a DirectX10 card, the GeForce 8800. Of course the retail price tag is about $499, and since there aren't any DirectX10 exclusive games yet, there's no reason to upgrade. HOWEVER, down the line DirectX10 will be amazing. It has all kinds of technical upgrades that I won't bother to get into (probably way over the average reader's head), but more importantly will run about 8x faster than DirectX9.

Just something to consider about Vista.

^^Smart post^^
AMD is going to introduce the R600 core soon. This beast can utilize up to a gig of RAM and has a 512 bit memory interface. Only problem is that it can consume up to 230 freakin' watts!

That's news to computer gamers, but what about the people who just want a reliable machine to work with pictures, home movies, music, email and internet? That is the core market for Apple, not the hardcore gamer. I'm in no way endorsing Apple or Microsoft Vista (see earlier posts by me on this thread), just trying to see it from other people's point of view.
