To Mac or not?

My at home Dell desktop needs replacement. My question is getting an HP or a MAC. Used mainly for searching the Web and doing some Excel work at home. Will the MAC be more reliable and can it run Excel applications. Have never used Apple PC's. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a friend with a lot of computer skills(at least compared to me) He said they are great computers! He also stated that the only thing he liked better about the PC was that the new programs come out a little faster for the PC than the Apple. I have also heard that they were much more simple to use, good to go right out of the box. I would like to get one. I think the next computer I get will be an Apple. Go and check them out. I looked at one with a 32 inch wide screen monitor it was so cool!

Go for it. They've (Macs) come a long way.
Microsoft makes Office for the Mac and although not 100% compatible, it works pretty well.
In terms of hardware reliability; Macs ad PCs are the same.
Macs have no known viruses (yet).

I wouldn't buy a Mac cause Windows does everything I want to do.

Thanks. Guess I'll go to the Apple store and Best Buys and check out both.

I was a diehard PC user untill about 6 months ago when i bought my first mac...a macbook to be exact. I think the key word being WAS a diehard PC user. I honestly havent touched my PC ever since i bought the thing. Simple, streamlined, productive...just a few words that describe a mac. Plus, since most of them are using intel chips now, you can dual boot into XP and have the best of both worlds.

If your a hardcore gamer, the PC/windows enviroment will still be king but for internet, photo/video editing, graphics, etc...simple day to day tasks, the mac clearly is a better choice...for me at least. Go try one...youll probably fall in love with it like i did.

Honestly, i think Apple is the way of the future. With them using intel chips they will do everything a PC will, but with the option to use OS X, it opens up a whole new world of computing. And with Microflops latest crap OS coming out soon, i think we may see more and more new mac users in the coming months/years.

Mac's may be good computers but are not widely used enough to be competitively priced.

I've been thinking about going this route too. I've been a diehard PC user and builder for over 14 years now. My brand new HP just started giving me problems, despite all the virus software installed, I think things are still getting through. The next computer I buy WILL be a Mac. I primarily use it for pictures, music and video anyway, so it's perfect.

So why do MACS get less viruses. Is it a better operating system they have or do hackers target window users since there are so many more of them?

I hate macs, always have and probably always will. They may be flashy, idiot-proof, and "hip" but a good PC will be far more reliable, powerful, and you'll actually be able to do stuff with it. I use to be a graphic design major and I couldn't stand how all of my professors swore by macs, and had no idea how to do anything in Windows. Adobe software will not only run on a PC, in my experience it's far more reliable on my PC than the crash-prone macs on campus. Hell, I've had my Sony Vaio desktop for years and it's never once crashed on me, gotten a virus (even now, long after my antivirus supscription expired), or done anything that would in any way piss me off. If you buy a good PC from a good company, you shouldn't have any problems. If you do, imho (as someone who's used both) the problems wouldn't be near as bad as they would be on a mac. Not just as far as reliability, I'm talking about waiting for companies to port their software designed for Windows over to Macintosh computers, etc. That is, if porting it is even possible. Like, how very, very few hardware intensive programs like modern computer games are succesfully ported.

Don't even get me started on their idiotic "iLife" bullcrap. People buy that crap like sheep. $100 for an "iHome" when all you'd have to do is buy a $12 set of computer speakers and plug them into your iPod's headphone jack. No snazzy overpriced box but when you think about it, that's really all macs are -snazzy overpriced boxes, with no real usefulllness or value. IMHO, **** apple.

Main reason would be restricted user accounts. There is no need to run everything perpetually from an administrator account. It's a much more efficient and secure OS due to it's roots (BSD).
