Sharp Aquos makes the best LCD TVs... clearest pics and very hi-res.
As for plasma, I hear Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, and LG are good. I have a Sony 42" LCD DLP HDTV (basically a rear-projection TV). good performance, good sound, but brightness is a little low. it's okay though, because my room is dark. |

Pioneer makes a beautiful Plasma tv but its kinda pricey. 1080P resolution is the newest thing except the only thing that supports it is HD-DVDs and Blueray movies. You at least need a HDTV cause thats where everything is headed. You really have to decide what your TV is going to be used for. If you watch a lot of movies or play videogames (PS3) those both have the potential for 1080P resolution. If your going to be only watching a lot of HDTV broadcasts then you really don't need to spend the extra $1000+.
Other things to look at: -Contrast ratio: The higher the better (2500:1 or higher I recommend) -Refresh rate: With a high refresh rate you wont see as much pixillation -Do you want a flat pannel or is a DLP what you want?: Most DLPs have bulbs that need to be replaced every 3-4 years depending on use. They cost a couple hundred of dollars. However Samsung has new DLPs that do not use bulbs but instead LEDs which give a better picture and last much longer. Also, make sure that if you get the warranty to find out if bulb replacement is covered. -Make sure to look at the TVs and compare them to others you are interested in, make sure you are looking at a high definition feed as well. Don't just look at the main picture but also look to see if you can see detail in the background (during a football game is the crowd dark and non apparent or can you see them in detail). Often times companies jack up their brightness and contrast to make unnatural whites (that look super white and impressive) and the result is that your background darks become washed out and blurred. Brands I recommend -Samsung: make an excellent LCD and DLP tv -Sony: great picture but your wallet will take a hit just cause its a Sony -Mitsubishi: They have been making big screens for years and have always made one of the best tvs IMO. -Pioneer: Great plasmas (Elite Series) but big hit on the wallet. Hope this helps, PM me if you have any more questions I used to sell these. |

+1 for Jkritas..
Samsung makes the best " LCD" ever.. IMO!!! My father bought a 32" LCD samsung, another 32" panasonic an another 32" Sharp.. both with "same specs".. Samsung was 4000:1 contrast ratio, and others = 3000:1.. The best picture was from the samsung (most expensive.. around $1100 - 1400).. :) |

My picks: 42 in Panasonic Plasma (Plasma rates better than LCD or DLP). You also have to have Cable or Satellite that broadcasts HDTV with HDMI ports, as well as a DVD Player that has HIDF output, Bose surround sound system. PS. The size of the TV you should pick depends on the viewing distance from the screen to where you sit. IE. 6.5 ft to 7 ft = 42 inch etc.

I have a Sony A10 50" LCD projector with a bulb. I'll put it up against any TV I've laid my eyes on. It's that clear...but at "only" 720p, a year later it's dated. I have a DVD player with upconversion and Comcast digital cable with EVERY HD channel available, so the picture has been tested regularly. Haven't seen what Blue-ray or HD-DVD looks like, as I am waiting for a format to take off or the damn 360 HD-DVD player to be released.
My uncle got a Mitsubishi DLP 55" 1080p and it looks damn good. Sony also has an SRXD 1080p, and it's the model I should have purchased from the beginning if I'd have known better. Sonys aren't that expensive, as I got a good deal legitimately on mine. |

I've got a Sony KP-51WS510. While it's not the most current technology out there, it does 1080i quite well, and you can probably find one pretty cheap.
If you want to go totally baller, check out the KP57WS510. I heartily recommend mine..

The reasons Samsungs look so nice, like you said, is because of their high contrast ratios. 3000:1, 4000:1, and even 6000:1 on some of their high end LCDs I believe. You can find cheap LCDs all over the market, and there is a big reason why they are so cheap. You pay for quality and workmanship, except Sony. There you get all that plus a $600 badge on your tv :) |
