In the camera world, the big players are Canon and Nikon. If you're interested in DSLR and see yourself getting more into it (upgrading lenses and bodies later on), then I'd go with one of those. I myself started with a Nikon D70 thinking I wouldn't do that (got it for the low shutter lag), but since then I've gotten 3 more lenses and a new body. Dropped maybe a total $6k so far on stuff.

You should go to the store and play with them. I'm used to the Nikon system now (button layouts mostly) and when I played with a friend's Canon, I really didn't care for it. Also, once you go with a system, it's hard to jump out of that and into another system (financially).

I don't know a ton about the latest dslr's, but I would agree with the above poster. I'd probably stick to nikon or canon if I were to buy a new one. I've used a number of non digital SLR cameras and the two that always stood on top were nikon and canon for features, ease of use, lenses, adapters etc. That's not to say that the sony wouldn't be a great camera though.

As an owner of zero stabilizing lenses, I can't say whether or not it saves the world, but IS is only useful for shooting non-moving things (e.g. it halts the sensor, not the world). So it doesn't quite replace a faster shutter speed, but is probably useful. I do fine with a blower for the dust issue (and barely even use it at that). And unless you're nit-picky about it or have shots you want to print out for serious business =), a few specks of dust isn't such a big deal and can be cleaned up in PP. Elsewise, the D80 and D200 use the same sensor as the Sony. (okay okay, the d200 uses a version that lets it shoot faster)

The review doesn't have anything that really convinces me that the Sony is a better choice over Nikon or Canon. I know you probably don't need me to push you in any direction, but it's my honest belief that either of those choices are a better one than Sony. If you want reasons for this, let me know. Or read stuff online. dpreview.com's pretty good for this stuff. Also, go read people's complaints about any given camera and see if there are any veto'ing issues (do take it with a grain of salt though; e.g. there are complaints on the d200 about banding, but only when taking a picture of a lightbulb).

It was fine as my first dslr. I never had an slr before that and it took me some time to learn all the details, so I wouldn't worry about missing controls that are on the d200 or higher. I still don't use all of the functionality that's in it. The only thing that bugged me was the inability to quickly switch from AF-C to AF-S, but that wasn't too hard to get around (I chose the AE-L/AF-L button to work as AF-ON).

Why not a d80? It has a lot of the d200 in it, though I guess cost is a factor too.

I'm not sure what lens the d70 comes with now (if it changed), but I got it with the 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5. This was a good lens. You can tell because a lot of the other kit lenses are f/3.5-5.6. It's easier to make a lens with a larger f-stop range. Smaller range = they put more effort into it. If you check the more expensive lenses, they're all the same stop the whole way through the zoom range. (e.g. 70-200mm f/2.8) This is regardless of brand, btw.
