Help...PC not booting
Quick run down. My pc will attempt to start, lights near power button and DVD drive light for 2 seconds then shuts down. I have 1 red led light on my motherboard that stays on while the power is supposedly on. I hold the power button for 5 seconds and light goes out. I installed the new DVD drive 1 week ago due to a failed old one. Yesterday it did this 2X in a row then botted normally, ran all day and I shut it down before going to bed. Today, nothing. What do I need to replace to get this back up and running? CPU? Hard Drive? Help!
Thanks |

Check your connections again. Are the fans still moving and the monitor just click off when it "shuts off"? Or does everything stop? If everything stops, it might be your PSU (power supply). There's a lot of IT folks on here so one of them will chime in with a better answer than mine.

Running Windows XP Home. My monitor stays in sleep mode no matter what. The fans start for 2 seconds at the most. I've checked every power connection from the plug to the wall to the power wire in the floppy drive. I pulled and re-plugged them all in. Even though I have a red led on the motherboard, my lights around the ethernet port do not light up. |

Did you install addition part to the computer? Sometime a incompatible part will shut down the computer. Maybe, you have too much stuffs run from the power supply ( PC power). I have that problems before, so I just remove some PCI card. It work nicely.

If you're still getting a blank screen at boot up, listen and note what sounds you're hearing, such as if the hard drive is making it's normal boot up sounds. If you have an extra hard drive, video card, or power supply that you can substitute to test, then swap each one out individually...one at a time. You're trying to determine which device might be causing the problem, so don't install multiple substitute components at the same time. I know, it's a tedious process and there's no clear answer right away, but that's pretty much how the technicians do it. You're other option is to bring to a repair shop and spend some cash. |

Thanks, I'm thinking power supply since I only have power for a split second or maybe a bad connection still. I'll pull everything one at a time and see what happens. |
