Who could build me a computer?
Ok so here's the deal. My dell is getting old and my g/f's hp has some issues (my mom likes to refurbish comps and she bought one, refurbished it and gave ti to my g/f).
We're moving to chicago and would like to have one solid computer instead of 2 OK computers. I will not need a screen as I already have a 17" lcd monitor. Just the tower. Depending on price there's two routes i'd go. 1: Basic comp. Very fast but nothing special. Would be using it mostly for music, internet, e-mail, typing, etc. 2: Good gaming comp. One that could handle Call of Duty without lagging and have a good picture. As far as video editing or holding 13,000,000 songs; i don't need something like that. Just a normal computer but one that could easily support COD. This is for serious computer builders only. There's no gurantee i'll have one of you guy/girls build one for me. First and foremost i'm interested on price, if it's a decent price then i'll probably have one of you build one for me. |

you mean 1TB total correct?
I would go with one of the online custom PC builders. Stay away from Dell (cheap parts) and alienware (overpriced and they are owned by Dell). If you really want I can spec out a PC for you. So you know, I am a network administrator for Alder International, so I won't be bullshiting you, I know what I speak =D

I have a PC I'm looking to sell too actually. AMD Athlon 64 3800+ (Newcastle Core), 1 Gb Low latency RAM (2-2-2-5) dual channel, ATI Radeon X800XT (voltmoded but I've always run it at stock voltages), Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZX sound card, PC Power & Cooling Power Supply, and lots of other stuff. I built it almost 2 years ago. I don't game anymore or anything so I would rather have the money. I'd be looking for about 800 + shipping or you can make an offer. I'm flexible :) If your interested, just let me know. Good luck finding a computer.

800 is a bit more then i'm looking to spend. It sounds like a great price though. That's why i mainly figure i'll be looking at just a basic tower. I'd like to have something capable of gaming but i'm not sure if my pocket can afford it. I could easily buy an total gaming computer now if i wanted too but i'm not sure if i'm going to be strapped for cash when i moved to chicago and need to dip into my savings account.

I'll build a good pc for you, for less than $600...but of course, if you want good stuff, you'll have to pay more. I love building PCs, so just let me know what you want/budget, and I'll make it for you for no more than the cost of parts and shipping :)
PM me if you are interested, and I can put something together for you real quick! |

Slickdeals is the shit. I check there all the time. Anyway, I could build you just a basic comp if you wanted. I work for MEDC in IT. I have an extra tower laying around that I could fix up for you if you would like. PM me if interested.

I'm a Computer Tech at the University of Nebraska (GO HUSKERS!).
Anyways, I build PCs all day. If you pay for all the parts and shipping, and pay me $20 for lunch, I can do it. Here are estimates on pricing: Gaming/Video Editing Machine 3.0 Ghz Dual Core processor: 150 Motherboard with Sound/LAN: 50 1 GB Memory: 100 Video Card (ATI 1600/Geforce 7600): 150 100 GB Hard Drive: 70 DVD-RW drive: 50 Floppy/mouse/keyboard: 10 Case: 50 Total=~$630 Decent Machine: 2.6 Ghz Dual Core: 100 Motherboard: 50 512 MB Memory: 50 Video Card: 50 100BG Hard Drive: 70 DVD-RW drive: 50 Floppy/mouse/keyboard: 10 case: 50 Total=~430 This doesn't come with any software or Windows. It can be A LOT cheaper too, just depends what you want. for example, TigerDirect.com has a lot of bare bones machines which are really cheap, and then we can just add more stuff to it. |

you'll want a super video card (nVidia 7600/7800), a gigabit ethernet controller (for fast online play), and some fast ram (for overall speed...OCZ, Corsair, etc). The intel core 2 duo is good and not too expensive ($180 for the cpu), but for a good gaming rig, you'll be shellin out somewhere along the lines of 700-800 including shipping and tax.
but the one thing phantazma forgot was the psu...you need power for your pc, and that's an extra 50-75 bux |

But if you want a good gaming PC for home or work... all you have to do is let me know!:) EDIT: I priced some real world values for you from Newegg.com, and it's just shy of 800 including tax and shipping for everything (with no software...of course you can reuse your current software). That's if you want quality and speed...if you want cheap, we can go that route too, but it won't be nearly as good for gaming. Last edited by tomasro; 10-20-2006 at 02:05 PM. |

At anytime theres always a sweet spot for value/performance in the computer hardware market. It usually sits just below $1000. Pay much less than that and you're wasting money cause you'll have to upgrade so soon. Pay much more than that and you're wasting money because you're paying a premium for the best & newest hardware on the market.
I wouldn't suggest spending under $800 if you even want to consider gaming. Sure it'll work today, but not for long. Also, even though Dell may skimp on components like motherboards (the single most important piece of a build) and such... in your case it may be nice to have someone to call if the SHTF, though the wait on hold can drive one crazy. One other thing to consider, is that some components are worth spending a lot on, and other are not. Don't spend a lot on the video card or the processor (I mean not over $150 ea). You will be able to upgrade those farily easily and prices drop very quickly. Whereas, I suggest that you do spend a lot on the case and the power supply. Those two are components that can greatly enhance stability (esp the power supply, but also the case for addequate cooling) and you can keep them through multiple motherboard and related component upgrades. Wooops... long post. |

Ya i built my computer completely with all parts equaled around 1500.. But I built a gaming computer that i can play any game at its highest settings with no lag ... and that nVidia 7800 video card is really good, i have 2 of those video cards hooked up to my motherboard.... but if you were to buy a prebuilt computer the Dell Xps series is good so either way is good.
