Haven't heard yet, have you tried resetting your modem? Sometimes, it's a priority issue. Unplug both your modem and router, and then plug them back in in order, modem first, then router. Wait until the modem is up and running properly before powering up your router. I feel like your going through what I go through about once a week. My router (Linksys WRT54GS) just quits on me for one reason or another and it only works if I reset my modem first and then my router, again, after the modem is fully functional. Hope this helps.

Also some modems are set to communicate with a specific MAC (Media Access Control) address. So you may have to setup your router to "Clone" your copmuter's MAC address... I had to do this for my Linksys WRT54G router to communicate with the Comcast cable modem. The cable guy hooks up the modem directly to your computer normally. If you install a router between your modem and computer sometimes the router must "pretend" to be your computer so that the modem will still talk to it Also I had to do a firm ware upgrade on it as soon as I pulled it out of the box
It's probably time for another reflash again for my router but it's still working after 3 years!

Or you might have gotten an lemon

Good luck!

I have a Linksys router. Everyday, I have to unplug and replug the modem and the router, for my laptop to get on the internet. I've had Cox come in and they installed a booster, but still have the same problem. I've called Cox several times and everytime, they tell me to do the same procedure. Now I don't even bother calling any more. You don't have to wait 30 seconds. Unplug both but plug the modem first then the router. I'm thinking to adapt a toggle switch to turn them off and on!!! What can I do?? What is the friggin problem??? When I bought the router from Best Buy I had one of their geeks come in to install it, as I was told it was too difficult to do myself. 150.00 bucks for 15 min of his time!!! WTH.!!

Is it because your connection is dropping? Or is it because your hardware is freezing up?

If you're connection is dropping, maybe you have a lot of line noise. Check your Modem signals (192.168.0.1, on most modems). You usually want your upstream power power level to be between +30 to +55 dBmV, your downstream power to be between -10 to +10 dBmV, and your SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) to be above 33dB. If your numbers are not in this range, call a tech to come out to your house. Also, how many spliiters do you have between your cable box outside and your computer? If it's more than 2, expect to have a lot of signal loss.

When first I open my laptop, it says my home network 8112 has excellent signal. Within the minute, trying to access the internet, no matter what page, it comes back saying page could not be found and the router is telling me there is no connection (or something). I close the laptop (put in standby), unplug and replug the modem and router in that sequence, go back to my laptop and get the excellent signal message again. From that point on, it does not give me any problems thru the night. The next day, I have to go thru the same again. Cox tech separated the modem cable from a splitter and added an amplifier? It was ok for a couple of weeks. I'll be calling cox again, as I have insurance on the cable system. Thanks.

Well, if your router is on all the time, I don't understand why the configuration would change between laptop usage. Maybe it's your laptop? If you can, post your modem signals up.

How many TVs do you have in your house? Is your house two stories? If it is, odds are your cable is split more than once, which usually leads to a weaker signal. Try going straight from the cable to your modem. I had a coupler/amplifier on mine, as well, but took it off and went straight to the modem to see if my signals improved, which it did.

How do I find out the modem signals? I'm not a computer geek. Sorry.

The address in your browser should be 192.168.0.1. That's the most common address for modems on a network.

Linksys uses 192.168.1.1 by default, most other stand alone routers I've worked with use 0.1 though.

If it's a modem/router combo ... god only knows. Contact your ISP.

Most of the advice in this thread is fairly sound, but whitecivicsi is bang on.

I worked as a D-link phone tech support for 1.5 months after I graduated for some quick coin until I got a real gig. Was very traumatic, but I learnt a few tips and tricks.

One thing I didn't see mentioned is that most routers made for home users have a tendancy to over heat when routing wired and wireless at the same time (the chipsets get hot and 'lock up' to prevent damage from overheating). Try moving your router away from other heat sources (like your cable/dsl modem, PC tower, etc) or even putting a small table fan to blow cool air over the top of the router. I know it sounds silly, but it has worked for people who are describing the same symptons (router works fine until you adda wireless device and it locks up/disconnects).

Cheers!
