do what i do. I have a shuffle, I constantly keep new songs on it. I go to kroq.com (miss that so cal music station). And DL the songs their playin and put it on my shuffle. Then I burn about every cd I have into data disc cd's for the cd player in my lx. Best of both worlds. You can get a shuffle (or any 512mb portable mp3 player for that matter) for quite cheap. Just keep all your new stuff on that and make mp3 cd's for the car.

This may be hypocritical of me, but do what you want, and don't be a whore for corporate fads.
If you don't feel you need an iPod, screw it. There are TONS of better Mp3 players out there, and they cost a lot less, too. If you don't want one at all, then don't feel like you need to.

your better off getting some type of mp3 player... doesnt have to be an ipod, but i'll admit i got sucked in to getting one but i dont reget buying it.
honestly its just really up to you to get what would fit your needs. like with my 30gb video ipod: lots of songs, couple of tv shows, passwords and notes (work at a bank), contacts, and some pictures. dont make that many cds since i could make playlists and just change them up whenever i need too. |

F*ck Ipods, theres enough competition now to where prices are getting much better than like $300 for a video Ipod. I got one of these, plays videos, mp3s, and is a fully functional digital still camera, and camcorder...

I definetly didnt want to jump on the iPod bandwagon, So I purchased a Creative ZEN vision M and Im telling you I'm loving it! Has twice the battery life as the Vid iPod and has more colors on the screen! PLus I have always been a fan of Creative Labs Products so this was a no brainer, I got it from JR computer world through Amazon.com for $277 with shipping! Its a 30gb and I got the blue one. Look it up on eBay or Amazon, its awesome.

Down with corporate America!@ Up with free love, drugs, and independence. It's like the 60's ideals all over again. Just with the internet.
If you go with a cd player, you'll likely regret it if you do any kind of exercising or travel. MP3 players travel very easily and can be slipped into pockets. And while people may wish to be different and go anti-ipod, there's something to be said for Apple build quality and intuitive-use. |

I've had an iPod mini and an iPod photo, and my friends all have them too. The battery life sucks miserably (I'm lucky to get eight hours out of my allegedly 15+ hours on my Photo iPod), and I've had friends who have had constant problems with their iPod. So much, that they've bought the warrenty and replaced them regardless before they could go to shit on them. Although I will say the iPod is the cutest looking, and has a cool scroll wheel. Something to say about how it looks, but its quality is subpar, at best, from my experiences.

Battery life is probably the number one gripe of most iPod owners, but having a rechargeable battery sure beats buying double A after double A. Plus, the advertised maximum battery life is USUALLY determined by minimal energy use-- not the energy intensive uses like cycling through different photos, songs, or movies at full brightness. That said, I've had one problem with my ipod (none with my nano). It kept accessing the hard drive, and the Apple help section was worthless. I thought it was shot. But on researching it on the web, the fix that I came across was actually to smack the thing. I thought it was a joke, but when I tried it, it really worked. It is now trouble-free again. And quite durable. |

Tim, you're right about that.
Most of the problems I've had with my iPod's were solved by looking at Tech forums online, not from Apple themselves. They also scratch ridiculously easy, and despite a massive amount of cases in the market, I've been hard pressed to find one that I really like thus far.

I say just spend the same amount of money on a better phone that plays mp3's. I have a Palm Treo 700p and I use it daily as an mp3 player as well as everything else that wonderful little thing can do. If you look around you can get a good deal on one that would amount to the same price as an Ipod video - just has several more functions.

I had an iPod for about a month, and sold it for almost as much as I bought it for. The thing was cool and all, but I don't need my entire library of music around with me at all times. I have a 2 gig memory stick in my phone now and I just listen to it when I'm bored. :) Of course, it also steams online radio if I get bored with my own music, and with windows media player I can do pretty much whatever I want.

No, it's not lame to use just a CD player. But even if it does play mp3s, it's a bit behind the times, however it's not useless. Having an iPod or other mass storage digital audio player (DAP) just makes it more convenient (i.e. you don't have to carry a bunch of audio CDs or mp3 CDs with you, depending on the size of the DAP).
If you do decide to make the jump, get yourself a player with at least 2GB of storage. That's about 3 mp3 CDs. And you don't have to get an iPod. There are literally tons of other options in the 1GB to 4GB range. If you plan on legally purchasing your music, it probably doesn't get much better than doing it from iTunes which is only compatible with iPods and some Motorola phones (RAZR w/iTunes, SLVR w/iTunes, ROKR). I have to admit that the iPod interface is pretty sweet, too. Anyhow, you can pick up a AAA battery operated 1GB DAP (non-Apple) for around $50 now-a-days. |
