I just took my car in for a B1 service(w/o oil change) at 17,xxx mi, and they told me that I still had 60% brake material on the fronts and only 5% brake material left on the rears. I found that odd as well, and asked one of the service dudes, "What gives?". He said that the rear pads are very small compared to the fronts and wear out a lot quicker. I don't know if that explains it, but thats what I was told...

This normally happens when you brake slow, meaning you anticipate braking. If you use the brakes this way, the rear brake will catch first rather than a more equal distribution when you do sudden stops.

Quite a plausible explanation...
