Porterfield R4 carbon kevlar pads.

So I have been running on the porterfield r4s street pads. They are just flat out awesome, but they are the r4s street pads. So with that said, I ordered a set of front pads since mine are fading out. Well, with a lot of BS coming from the place I got the pads out, I finally just drove there to pick them up. And on the way home, I looked at the box, and they gave me the r4 carbon kevlar track pads.

So. I guess you can say I saved money since they are more expensive and they made the mistake of giving me the wrong pads. But my question is, is how will driving on the street be with these pads? I have heard that they need to be up to temperature to stop the car. So does this mean that daily driving on the street is not a good idea? or was that an over exaggeration ? Because If its not going to be that big of a deal to drive on the street, then I really wanna slap these on. But if its going to be a safety issue and if I will glide right through my first stop light, then I want to return them.

The will eat your rotors, and not stop well untill they are up to temperature ... In daily driving they will rarely be up to tempurature.

Quote from Porterfield "Optimum R-4 operating temperatures are 450ºF and above"

You are "OK" to drive to and from the track (Not reallly recommended but duable) on Race pads, but I would not recommend driving on them daily

Agreed. If you don't install them, bring them back and exchange them.
They may honor that.

yo buddy long time no chat. i thought u were using the porterfield r4 pads for for the track already... i would change them, they are definitely not daily driving pads. if u can, purchase the r4s as well so u can have pads for the street and pads for the track.

nope, I was using r4s 's .. but, I called my friend, he has an s2k. And he is running the r4 carbon kevlar pads for street use. So. I went ahead and installed them. They brake just fine.

When they said the Optimal temp is 450 or above. I think they just mean that the best temp to brake at and to get the best stopping potential is at that temp. Doesnt necessarily mean that its not going to stop the car at lower speeds. Like daily driving.

I use R4s on my car and I have also used the R4.. So this is what I think.. The R4s will over heat when you beat on it.. its a good auto x and street pad... under hard abuse I would go with the R4.. say from a stop from 80MPH.. the R4 will stop shorter.. they need a little heat... but they are not like most race pads... i would say if you drive hard this is a better pad... I have been using porterfield pads for close to 14 years... I know there compounds... the are always a little softer then what they say.. The R4s is alot like a hawk hp pad but wont take as much heat... the R4 is a little more then a hp.. but they will ruin stock rotors.. if you where running the fast brakes willwods like me then i stay with the R4s .. its just to hard to get them up to temp...the R4 is a little to much.. but on stock rotors you will be ok...

Yeah. I called porterfield yesterday and they told me that safety wise, the R4 is just fine as long as I break them in properly. The only thing they said is that they will wear down fast. In comparison to lets say, stock pads.. So im just gunna use em. May as well right? lol given the fact they are already installed lol.
