weird anti-lock brakes?

i dont know if im the only one with this awkward feeling on the brakes, but whenever i slam on my brakes, the brakes make a weird noise and the brake pedal has a weird feel to it. sometimes when i ride over bumbs in the road like rail-road crossings and apply the brake, it also has a weird feel to the brake pedal. it kind of feels like im grinding the brakes or something. anybody else have that happen? oh and incase you dont know its an si w/ 1500 miles.

Those are the anti-lock brakes doing what they do best...not locking up. That's completely normal. Enjoy your ride!

I've had the same feeling when hitting the brakes over bumps or potholes. And like everyone says, it's just the ABS doing what it's supposed to do.

Yup. First time I ever engaged ABS in a car (it was snowing), I was all "OMG I broke the car!!!" for an instant before I remembered I was braking quite gently, so how could I have broken the (hehe) brakes? Then I remembered the talk of ABS being noisy and "bumpy" via the pedal.

When ABS is engaged, it doesn't make a squeaking sound. I can't describe it, but you'll know what I mean if you try it out. In fact EVERYONE who has ABS should try it out so that you know what it sounds and feels like. Find an empty, open parking lot, turn off the radio, roll down your windows, travel at a safe moderate speed (not too slow), brace yourself and slam on the brakes HARD. You'll feel a pulsing sensation...don't let up...keep your foot down until you stop. Try it again and pay attention to all the noises and sensations you feel. Next try hitting the brakes hard and try turning in an emergency lane changing maneuver and see how it feels. Practice it a few times until you feel comfortable with it. Next, leave before mall security comes by to bust your ass.

I think the EXACTY same thing happened to me when I went over a speed bump at the dealership. I shifted into neutral, then I slowly went over the speed bump at like 3 or 4mph with my foot pressing the brake. Then all of a sudden my brake pad feels WEIRD, like it was grinding something! I was like oh shit! What did i break now???? I hope it was the ABS and not me damaging something important!

+1 I completly agree with you. Everyone should know what it feels like so you are not caught off guard the first time you have to use it. Also if you do it a few times be sure to let your breaks cool down a good bit before you apply your parking brake. There have been instances where the brakes get so hot the weld themselves together.

My question is, where has everyone been ? ABS has been on some cars since the 80's.... I think that past 95 or something, every car had it...

Some guys here are newbie drivers. Others have not experienced ABS for years even though they have it in their cars. Others haven't had a new car for over 10 years.

My two cents:

It's even better to test ABS (as mentioned, slow, mall-parking-lot-style) on snowy/icy or wet pavement. Engages much easier, for longer, and is easier on the car and tires. 'Course, gotta be more careful!

I will say this....my 7th gen Civic that I traded in had ABS and I only once felt it in action over 3 years..and that was slideing on snow...The ABS system with the new generation Civic is very touchy/sensitive...three times now have I felt it engage...twice over bumps...and once in loose gravel/pebbles on the road...it's just weird having it engage when the roads aren't that bad (e.g. snow/rain)

Mt last Civic didn't have ABS so I didn't know what to expect.

Same here, I've felt the ABS several times on loose gravel also even only going 10mph. Kinda scary if your not expecting it.

Yeah i agree, my civic has extremely touchy ABS. The first second of anything its starts going on. I changed tires with both summer and winter and hasnt made a difference. So i figure its just the Honda ABS sensor that is extremely sensitive. My Maxima would never engage the ABS unless i slammed on the breaks. I prefered that, this is tad too touchy for me...

I agree. The ABS in my Si is very sensitive. Perhaps it's because the stock all-season tires aren't that good (grippy) so there's more wheel slippage (is that a word?).

Just wanted to add..."same here"

I have yet to drive this car in the rain or in gravel, etc. and my ABS has engaged several times in the month I have had it.

I brought this up to service manager when I had car in for other issues and he said brakes are not adjustable. He has noticed the issue but has no idea what is causing it.
