If you're referring to me, then you are INcorrect.

From the very beginning (late 2005 after SEMA) I knew that Koni saw the importance of making a damper for the new FG Civic. However, the debate has been over whether Koni would make a direct-replacement strut OR if they would make insert cartridges that would fit inside the OEM strut housing.

Due to its popularity the direct replacement option is the most logical, but Koni hasn't had much luck getting the stampings required to make a strut housing.

Honestly people, if Koni decided from "Day 1" to exclusively do just inserts, we could have had something on market at least a year ago.

Exclamation News!!!

OK... Here's some info. The news isn't good for those of you looking to do something in the short-term.

Anthony,

I did speak to him but I didn't get any real answers. They have not yet received the actual spring perch stampings yet which is the major hold-up. They are working toward inserts for now for the Civic in Europe but know that the full strut is our priority in the US. One big complication is that for the first time Honda has a different strut on those cars in Asia, North America and Europe. Once before they did the Type R/'88 CRX/Taiwanese rear lower control arm thing but this is a broader range difference apparently. He couldn't really give me any more info that otehr than that they are still moving forward but not ready to state a time frame for availability.

Believe me they know, but they can't do anything about it if Honda doesn't sell them stampings to make copies of our front strut housings regarding the spring perch and knuckle brackets.

Again, if it was decided that we were to only get inserts, they would have been available quite some time ago.

I really don't want to be a dick about this, but Koni also has part numbers. Have someone at Skunk2 physically take a picture of a unit IN INVENTORY, even if it's boxed, with that part number (541-05-1250) and post it here.

And no, Koni doesn't "sponsor" me.

honda93, you are correct about the shocks from Skunk2. I had a feeling you knew what you were talking about so I contacted them again and this is the response I got.....

Thank you for contacting the Helpdesk at Skunk2 Racing. We apologize for the inconvenience but the sport shocks for the 06+ Si will not be available most likely until late in the year (Winter). If you have any more questions regarding Skunk2 products or policy please let us know. Thanks.

I hate being right in matters like this, but basically, if the big guys (Koni, Bilstein) don't have a product, neither will the little guys. I don't care what anybody says, without physical proof, don't believe it.

wow, that sucks about the koni. i thought they were gonna come out soon. i guess honda don't want to sell them the stampings because they know it will outsell their hfp suspension. i guess mugen is the good choice now. they have the mugen ss and the mugen type r suspension and it fits the fg2.

So what are TEIN and buddy club and megan using in their setups? I have always been somewhat leary like the above poster says when the more generic manufacturers are so fast to market. I have been talking to the guys at ground control for awhile now and even they don't have any clue on koni or bilstein.

It isn't hard to make a strut... Here' a simplified recipe.

1. Get general dimensions of the OEM assembly, and match it up with an existing part.
2. Weld a spring perch on.
3. Weld knuckle bracket on.
4. Test unit, if necessary, change valving.
5. If happy, market product and sell.

Again, it is very simplified, BUT the holdup lies in the spring perch and knuckle bracket. Koni wants to ensure that their product (to remain the best large-volume manufacturer out there) passes curb impact tests. Plus, an aftermarket strut needs to work with an OEM style spring.

Someone developing a coilover (threaded) body strut will use existing spring perches as they usually work with 2.5" I.D. race springs from companies like Eibach or Hypercoil (Ground Control uses Eibach ERS, for example).

The only hold up then is the brackets. Simply making two metal plates with holes for the strut bolts and welding it to the strut body is not acceptable to companies like Koni, Bilstein, or even Tokico who warranty their product and fully intend their shocks/struts to be on a car in any and all conditions year round for many years to come.

On some level, the quality at the start also helps ensure each brands corporate lawyers stay happy because we all know someone will sue, even if they have no grounds to do so!!!

It is because of all this, coupled with what I do with my LX Coupe (National-level SCCA autocrossing) that will keep me waiting for a large, reputable brand to produce a high quality set of struts and shocks that I know will withstand whatever I throw at it...

For those of you just looking to "slam 'yo shizzle" can buy whatever you wish. Tein, for example, would love your money, and so would their *** little anime mascot.

^^^LOL *** little Mascot. At this point koni should just do an insert for the stock shocks!! THere easy and they pass the curb tests.
