What is the difference & benefits between a rear sway bar and a lower rear tie bar?
What is the difference & benefits between a rear sway bar and a lower rear tie bar? If they both work the same way, which one is better in performance?
btw, isn't Megan Racing's lower rear tie-bar is the same as Corsports'? They look the same, so maybe they just slapped on the brand names. I wonder who is the maker? |

" Maybe, Rear lower tie bars came to be after cars with modified suspensions started to rip rear lower control arms out of their mounts... Fairly common on the older Civic's & integras. But, I havent seen nor heard of such things happening to the current Civic/RSX's... So such a reinforcement my not be needed. Basically, it may not be needed, but its not hurting any thing (but your wallet) and it may be nice to have a little bit of re-assurance that your not going to damage the car. "
A sway bar Only ties the rear suspension toghetether Making it act more like a solid rear axel. and when the car leans, the anti-roll bar pushes up on the inside wheel compressing the inside wheels spring a bit (thats where it gets the extra force to resist body roll) How well the bar resists twisting determins how much force it has to compress the inside spring. Fun thing about anti-roll bars. in doing thier jobs of resisting body roll, they also artificially increase the amount of load on the outside tire. which, given the way tires make traction, means that there is a Net reduction in the total amount of traction that end of the car can make (the end with the anti-roll bar). So... in some cases, it may be advantagious to reduce the effectiveness of an antiroll bar. Such as on the front of a FWD car.

haha... yeah a tie bar is way different than a sway bar. A tie bar (or street bar...or strut bar..) is something used to keep suspension pick-up points (where the suspension meets the chassis) from moving around. When the chassis flexes, it allows the suspension control arms and such to move and flex....and that means you are essentially getting changes in alignment more or less. It's important to keep suspension pick-up points in place. A tie bar helps do that.
A swaybar acts as a spring, but only in a turn. It allows a more compliant spring but without allowing the car to lean in a turn so much. It's also a great tuning tool for fast changes. As you can see, tie bars are a chassis rigidity part where swaybars are sprung weight tuning tools. Chris at RedShift |
