Pad Transfer - ruined rotors?
I ran my 07 Si at Buttonwillow yesterday. I have Axxis Ultimates, Stoptech slotted rotors and ATE Super Blue. The pads left some serious deposits on the rotors, resulting in an obvious vibration. Any idea what I can do about it, short of changing the rotors again?
Thanks! |

Well, I put in ATE Super Blue and wrapped the hard lines in the engine compartment in heat tape. Are you recommending another fluid change?
Also, what brand of pad would you suggest for a daily driver that is occasionally tracked? Your input is greatly appreciated! I know that you have been running this car for a long time and your opinion carries a lot of weight! Thanks! |

After every track event the fluid should be changed. But you got the blue so swap it out withthe gold now. There really won't be a pad that you can reliably use both and be happy IMO, at least if your driving hard enough on the track
![]() I would get some cheap plain rotors from liked any autoparts store, and some Hawk Blues for track days. Swap em back and forth. Only way to get REAl braking on the track and deal with them on the street, is to have two sets. Bed the pads on the way to the track in the morning, and if you leave early enough and its kinda dark out the hawk blues spark from being such an aggressive compund. |

OK...so I put the OEM rotors back on the car for now. I decided to keep the Ultimates on for the interim. In preparation for my next track day maybe I will try the Hawks and afterwards put the OEM pads back in. Or maybe I will just finish the Ultimates at the next track day (which is in May at California Speedway) and then do a combo OEM pad for daily use and Hawk HP plus for track days.
What do you think? |

How hard do you drive on the track? Just because the Hp+s won't be aggggressive enough for you if you are an aggressive track driver. I would get two sets of "oem" rotors one for the track and one for the street. Then every time you swap the pads swap the rotors cause the track rotors will get eaten up quicker. No need to put the set screw in, just torque the lugs properly this will make the swap alot quicker and easier and generally not cause any issues.

well last year when i was tracking my car i was using Hawk HP+ in the front with brembo x-drilled rotors for the rear i was using Hawk HPS and brembo x-drilled rotors.. didn't bother changing hte brake fluid kept it with the honda fluid... used that setup for track and street it held me up pretty good, i'm pretty aggressive on the circuit..
the only fluids i change after every track day is engine oil and transmission fluid. Now i have Brembo 4 pot calipers that i need to try out.. can't wait.. just my $0.02 |

Thanks for all the great info guys!
My spare time is somewhat limited so I need to make a change that I can use and not mess with. Stoptech sells the Ferodo DS2500 which they claim can be used as a street and track pad. According to the ST site (regarding the Ultimates): "ULT is NOT recommended for use on road courses in front calipers. Doing so can cause pad deposition on rotors as well as the resulting vibration. " I guess I should have read that first... Regarding the Ferodo DS2500: "Ferodo DS2500 is a club race pad that can be used on the street and for light track use. This compound produces some noise on the street, but retains good cold friction, and has an MOT of around 1,000 degrees F. It also has 35% less compressibility than competitive products, giving it very good pedal feel and modulation characteristics. DS2500 has an average friction level of approximately (0.50) which remains constant at any speed, and at any temperature up to 1,000° F." I am not that hard on brakes on the track. Although I experienced pad transfer with the Ultimates they never faded. I think the Ferodo should be just fine (since they have slightly higher MOT than the Ultimates) but would appreciate feedback from anybody who has used them before. My initial thought is to get replacement rotors from ST and the Ferodo pads. I will bleed my brakes when I make the change. My rear ST rotors should be fine and probably do not need attention. Can anybody point me to a vendor who sells the Hawk HP Blues? I am having trouble finding them. Thanks again! |

Ferodo DS2500 are a good pad, as are Cobalt GT-Sports. I believe the Ferodo is more biased to the track, while the Cobalt is a biased toward auto-x and street use. Both should be relatively quiet on the street, but not like the OEM pads. I'm not sure if either had good initial bite, since I haven't used them for a while, but that should be a non-issue on the track. Both will be compatible with Ultimates if you swap them in and out for track and street use.
One thing about Blues is that some folks have issues with the dust pitting wheels and paint. You probably should go to the Honda-Tech Roadrace/Auto-X forum to ask more questions and find a vendor if the downsides are acceptable. |
