Powerslot Big Brake Rotors Installed!

As some of you may know, we test-fit Powerslots big brake rotor upgrade yesterday. Installation went smoothly though you should note the following:

-Use of 17 inch wheels requires an inner wheel diameter of at least 15.5 inches to clear the caliper. We will test fit the stock wheels next week...

-Any 18 inch wheel should fit without issue.

-You can order the kit from our website or just give us a call!

http://www.z1auto.com/prodmore.asp?m...ng&prodid=2131

On the road the brakes feel the same during normal driving (since we have not yet changed pads). However, under heavy braking the difference in braking power is immediately noticeable and the improvement is impressive. We will be testing a few different pad combinations soon (front and rear) and we also have stainless brake lines on the way, both of which should improve pedal feel.

And you simply can't deny how mean these brakes look:

those look BA!!! Is that price really for the front only??? Seems extremely high for a pair of rotors... maybe I should do more research. If that's the regular pricing for a pair, I will not have these on my list anytime soon. If it's for all 4, that just moved it up a LOT sooner.

I think part of the extra cost is because of their relocating brackets for the calipers. I'm pretty sure it's just for the front though because the item says "Front Rotor Kit" on the website.

Exactly - these are quality pieces, not cheapy ebay rotors and those caliper brackets are really really nice!

Perhaps my physics is a bit rusty...but using the same pad on a bigger (heavier) rotor will increase stopping distance, not decrease it. By using the same size pad, they have not increased the area of contact with the new bigger rotor compared to the stock rotor. They have however increased the rotational mass, which means more inertia, which means longer time (distance) to stop. You've also not changed the caliper, which means the same amount of clamping force as before.

Am I missing something?

Which actually lessens surface area available for contact (and a whole other host of problems with slotted/drilled rotors.) The slots certainly aren't doing anything to decrease stopping distances. I thought about putting it in there, but it seemed not worth it.

After my initial post, I've been doing some reading. Dissipating heat quicker is (as best I can find) the only reason to get a bigger rotor (without getting new pads/calipers as well) which will help in average stopping distances, but will not change the vehicles "best stop".

No one ever suggested changing the rotor changes the cars best stop. If you want to stop the car better you can either change to a better tire, or change to a pad with a better coeficient of friction (mu).

The larger rotor does resist fade better as it absorbs heat at a slower rate due to it's increased mass. It also alters the brake torque and overal brake feel is MUCH beter now than it ever was with the stock rotors. Given the improved feel, and the side benefit of improved looks, and the great price, it's a win win all around. If we did not like how the car felt afterwards, we would have removed them right away - the last thing we like to do here is change things for the sake of changing them. If the factory does it better, I'd just assume leave it alone.

I can post the weight differences if you like

8thcivic members can call for special pricing!

Your brake performance will be worse because of this upgrade.

Why? Because if you only swap out the front brake rotors you're dramatically shifting the front/rear brake bias. You should only change all four rotors, and to the correct specs. If you change only the front rotors, the increased torque from the larger rotor diameter means there's a disproportionate amount of brake torque being applied in the front than the rear--as a result, your stopping distance will suffer than compared to the stock rotors.

They look nice, but you'd need the full set of four to improve track performance.
