Mild Winter Tires?

I was wondering if any of you could recommend any winter tires that you've had experience with in the past. Our winters here in Toronto have been pretty mild the past few years so getting tires that perform amazing in heavy snow isn't that big of a deal for me.

I'm looking for a tire that has a good lifespan (won't wear out after just a few seasons of use) more than anything.

Or if any of you can point me to a site with good tire reviews (I've looked and end up ). Also if any of you can suggest an other things I should look for when looking for a winter tire that would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I've used Michelin Alpin Pilots and Bridgestone Blizzaks and been really happy with both of them.

As for reviews check out tirerack.com

You'll see more about winter tires when we get closer to the season like maybe around October.

I liked Blizzaks alot because I had the Alpins on a AWD car but had the Blizzaks on a RWD and I tore up the streets in heavy snow.

This year for my SI I'm most likely going for Blizzaks.

i have use 2 brand each for one winter first was nokian Hakkapeliitta bought with 14" steelies used for one winter prior ( 04 acura EL) great on ice and compact snow little louder then stock tires on dry pavement at little price if buying new overal a great winter tire. the second one that i am currently using is the goodyear ultra grip good on ice compact snow seem to work better in deeper snow qietier then the nokian on dry pavement but still a little louder then stock tires. wasnt a big fan of goodyear tires but after using these this past winter my oppion has changed overal a good middle of the class winter tire.

Thanks! I'll start taking a look at the Blizzaks and the Goodyears. Also, when would be a good time to buy? Would stores more likely have sales during off season or do they typically have a big blowout just before winter hits? Sorry for the questions, this'll be the first time for me buying winters :)

dunlop wintersport m3's are great if you want some good dry traction as well as snow/rain traction. it's more of a compromise than the blizzak's, but they don't feel as unsafe on dry roads at highway speeds as the blizzaks

I am a firm supporter of the blizzaks... i have had them on my prior 1994 BMW 325is which was RWD and went through two New Hampshire winters with them. I never felt unsafe and was able to continue on in blizzards where I would see cars slammed into snowbanks on the side of the road. My fiance has a 97 Civic DX and she also has a set of Blizzaks for winter after two prior years of a all season set for winter. She was amazed at how much better the performance in snow was with the snow set.

I have a new 06 GG Ex Coupe now and I know I'll be putting Blizzaks on them. I can't recommend them enough.

The NS-1 is a mud and snow tire as well as performance. there only about 60 dollars apiece. I would rate them better then any US tire.

How much did winter tires cost you guys? I'm going to have to purchase them this year and well, I'm curious how much I'll be down the hole.

i had some Cooper weather masters, very nice. turned my DSM into a tank. one suggestion is getting the snow tire 1 step thiner than stock size. because thiner tires are better in snow for some reason.

J you and me should shop together since I need to pick up some winter tires as well.

I heard the blizzaks burn out alot faster then other tires......

Im debating between blizzaks and michelins. Need to do some more research myself!

hey, i am not a big fan of winter tires but i will share this... so i got my Ex Sedan last november and drove through winter with those crappy stock Good Year Ealge RS-A tires, i am telling those tires are shit, they will skid on water but since in recent years in the toronto area(mississauga) hasn't been snowing too much, i would say just buy a set of really nice 4-seasons then u can save the money for the winter tires too... u know u can always avoid driving on that snow day ^^, thats just what i think cause winter tires are expensive...

You didn't mention if you were staying with the 17" rims. If you don't mind trading looks for better traction, I would go with a -2 on the rim size to a 15" (assuming this will work on an SI?!?) and get a narrow snow tire. Less floating on the snow the narrower you go, but it does look stupid.

Kish-81. We'd be going with 16's because 15's wont fit. Some 16's done clear our brakes either, but I remember seeing a member with steelies on when I first joined the site, so if your around.......please post up and let us know!!!

you won't get better traction with a 15" wheel, how thick your tire is doesn't make a difference with traction. duh like said no 15" on earth will fit 16" EX wheels won't even fit. there is absolutely no reason to buy steelies unless you REALLY like your factory wheels. so you basicly have to stick with 17"s and you're not trading for anything.

on an si i wouldn't go with snow tires unless you live in super snow area. FWD, 6-speed Manual, LSD, and ZERO power under 4k rmps = a good car in the snow. it will be very easy to contorl because you don't have any power unless you rev it the sky.

snow tires ware out really quick, you probably get 2 winters out of them with average milage. (8k per winter) I had snow tires on my eclipse because it had 220 lbs tq at 3k rmps. even with a manual its hard to keep that beast from sliding sideways off the road. ( and i'm not kidding) i'm not even thinking snow tires on the Si

I've gotten away with just using all seasons on the other cars I've driven, but then again they were also pretty heavy (mini van) or AWD (CR-V). This is why I was looking into getting just mild winter tires since the winter's here aren't really all that bad, and the streets are always plowed anyway. Perhaps I should look into all seasons as well. Thanks for the input.
