popping sound from right front(passenger side)
please read.
this is a post i uncovered from 2 other forums...this guy is hearing a popping sound coming from his front passenger side...it's a continuous popping when truning the steering wheel. His only mods are Comptech springs. Reason i am posing it here is because i hear a similar sound coming from my front passenger side as well..however mine is only 1 pop and only happens when i am almost at full lock...happens while i am turning the steering wheel and not after the car is moving or has moved....1 pop and that's it...his is a series of pops. lowered on coilovers. Another Si owner lowered(coilovers) also has the same issue...on that one side as well....front passenger side...not sure if it's 1 pop or a series of pops...but he stated that his last car did the same thing and it wasn't anything that was wrong...he had a SER V-spec sentra lowered on factory nissan/nismo springs...so he figured it's nothing wrong with the Si now that his is doing the same thing...but i'm not soo sure. So 3 lowered Si...all making the same sound, from the same location, only on that one side...what do u make of this? and is anyone esle experiencing this? note one guy has a continuous popping...others get 1 pop(atleast i do), all cars are lowered on springs or coilovers. Right click save as (6 MB)... http://sweb.uky.edu/~rjnahr2/si/steerpop.mpg Hey all, the only aftermarket suspension work I have done is I am lowered on Comptech springs. The springs ride good, no issues, had them on for a few months... about 2 weeks ago I noticed as I was backing out of my drive and turning the wheel I heard a real light, "pop, pop, pop, pop, pop" coming from the passenger front wheel. sound got a little louder, and now it's always. It's only that wheel, and it's only when the wheels are turning back and forth (pulling into a parking spot, making a low speed turn, etc.) The springs are silent (I drive somewhat rough roads and they don't squeak or make noise). it's ONLY that front right, and it's ONLY when turning the wheels. like, if I turn the wheel and hold that position and drive in circles it won't make the sound. similarly it won't make the sound if I'm driving straight and I have zero other noises. it's just a popping sound while actually turning the steering wheel and only front passenger. pot holes... anyone who has ever been to Lexington, KY will vouch we have some of the worst roads ever... I've managed to miss 'em all I believe, but there have been one or two times where I've hit a rough/sharp edge on uneven pavement during road work. So it's possible. The car drives straight as an arrow. So I'm stumped. I'm nervous about bringing it in (I hate going to the dealer), not to mention I have aftermarket springs, race header, reflash, etc. Don't really feel like hearing a bunch of mumbo jumbo about any of those items. I'm wondering what is causing this sound. Any ideas? Thanks! Rob

My roommate's Si did it even when it was stock so I don't think it has anything to do with lowering springs.
Honda, a local performance shop, and myself have examined all of the motor mounts and they are all perfectly fine. Also, I have PERSONALLY completely taken out the motor mount that everyone says causes this and looked it over. The thing is perfectly fine. I have also installed the Ingalls ETD (which works with that same motor mount) and it STILL makes the noise, so this noise is in the suspension. My guesses are as follows: 1.) The spring is rotating slightly when you turn. When you do this, it comes out of it's perch only to pop back into place a slight while later. That or something is causing it to bind. I have a problem believing this theory since even a stock Si or two have reported this. 2.) The strut tower bearing (allows the whole strut assembly to move) is bad. Someone reported that this fixed the issue but since the car was lowered they had to pay for Honda to fix it. I believe the total was under $200 labor-included. This is a very possible solution to it since a lot of the people are lowered and would have indirectly been messing with this part. 3.) It's a problem in the strut itself. STI owners report these types of noises when the strut itself goes out. I have a problem believing this since most people report it when they are turning the steering wheel. Mine only happens on hard shifts or wheelhop, though. I think #2 is the one that makes the most sense to be honest. I was the one with the SE-R Spec V that had this. The car had a full Nismo coil-over setup on it and I wasn't the only person who reported the problem. It only happened under turning. I believe it dealt with the spring itself binding, IIRC, but can't remember the full conversation I had. Also, that car had a set of solid motor mounts in it so TRUST ME when I say it wasn't the motor mounts that caused it in that car, either. lol |

I've got the right side pop (lowered on skunk 2 springs). Like you were saying Sicky, pops once, at about full wheel turn. Usually happens in a parking lot. Doesn't happen all the time though, and NEVER happened until I put the springs on.

I never had a noise like this with my stock suspension. I installed tein basic' coilovers and for a little while still never had a noise. Then one day it starting making this clunking noise from the front passenger side wheel, only when turning at slow speeds. I jacked my car up to check the suspension, and just to be safe tightened all the suspension bolts that where removed for the tein install, espeacially the lower strut bolts. I haven't heard that noise ever since, so maybe all you guys should check that out.
