that is true.. i guess i was expecting more out of admin/mod to have more overall opinion rather than a complete relation to the person..but your right you cannot necessarily take the concept of individuals away from the ones that know each other..

the consensus of the site probably would do..but i have to say it is a popularity contest.

Ok Im posting my comment here then since it got deleted in the ROTM thread.

Seriously this months nominees are the worst Ive seen in a long time. You'd think that with as many nice cars out there that we could find some cars that actually deserved mention. What is so special about any of these rides?? Ive seen them around on the site for a long time and they havent changed. They are nice cars but they arent anything special. Im not blowing my own horn especially because i havent posted an update on my car, but these cars don't have half the QUALITY mods my car does and Ive never even been mentioned for ROTM. Not that I really care to be that much but I just think ROTM should be the best of the best not some random semi modded car just because the person is popular on the boards. Again nothing at all against the nominees or their cars. This just an honest opinion of what the ROTM should be about.

Ok, here's my take on this ROTM thing... forgive me if I come across a little cranky or abrasive, but I encourage everyone to read it, as I took a lot of time and thought to put this together -

So let's go right down to the basics
Ride of the Month is a monthly competition we organize to get people motivated and rewarded to modify their car as they see fit. It's a purely qualitative / subjective contest that is started by members nominating other people's cars that they think is ROTM-worthy. Once we have a group of cars voted in, we let you vote for the best of the bunch. Therefore, the members nominate and vote for the winner.

What are the criteria?
Essentially, there are none. You guys figure it out. If someone wanted to vote me in just because they like the color of my car, then so be it. Or if someone likes any car with hubcaps, they vote for them. Or if people like the owner, regardless of the condition or modifications of their car. We don't set restrictions on how many mods, or how much money you've spent because this is a competition that is truly open to all members.
Of course, there seems to be some trends though - mainly aesthetic mods are recognized (projector retrofits, HFP kit, rims, lowering, CF, etc). And that's absolutely fine. Sure, an HFP kit costs much less than a turbo, but if people don't know what's under the hood, chances are, the HFP is gonna win out.

The problems (yes, problems)...
The problem I see is that many members are annoyed that they aren't nominated. Why? Well, the most common problem is that they don't have an intro thread! How do you expect us to know about your car if you don't show us? It's that plain and simple. And just because you've been here for a while, doesn't mean everyone knows you right away. Have an intro thread, update it with photos and discussion, and sell your car to us. Keep us (the members of 8thcivic) in the loop. A good example is Atruhondagrl - she's got a nice thread going with constantly updated photos and she's actively answering questions.
This leads me to the second issue - people need to know how to take good photos. It's plain and simple. If you are gonna show me a photo taken by your cellphone, I wouldn't pay attention to it at all. You don't need a dSLR to take good photos, as I've said in the past (hello - Kelmar!). Just put in the effort. I (we) can tell if someone just took quick pics or actually put in the effort to show us their progress. Remeber, photos are the only way 99% of us will ever see your car. So, of course, it's a very critical component of ROTM. Good framing, good lighting, and good color & balance = nice pics.
Finally, (this kinda ties in to my first 2 points) - make the effort to participate in the site. I'm well aware that people are most comfortable in their Regional Forums because their friends are there too. Branch out. Participate in other forums. Give us a chance to get to know you. Just because your buddy knows you have a turbo, doesn't mean we know as well. For me, getting to know the person is more important than what car they drive, so I'd say 60% of my vote is whether I like the person or not. Again, these are my criteria; you don't have to follow the same.
So to answer everyone's questions on whether or not this is a popularity contest - IT IS. Would you be happy if we changed the title to "8thcivic Monthyl Popularity Contest"? *rolleyes*

What happened this month?
This month was unique. We had a member that was nominated by people who was not an active member and didn't respond to our requests to provide photos. Upon further invetsigation, it appeared that this member was voted in as a joke. We're having none of that. Unfortunately, due to some internal communication breakdown, his name was still entered in the ROTM voting thread. (Yes, this is the part where I take some of the blame). Now the way our vBulletin works is that once you start a poll, you can only add more options, you can't remove. Therefore, we had 4 options, but only 3 people in the running. The first 3 options are valid ones, but the last one was not, so to deter people from voting on Option #4, I put in "Vote here if you want to be banned". I thought that people would be more mature and not vote there.
But I was wrong.
I can't believe how many people were voting for that. I was sooooo close to banning a whole bunch of people (around 10), but I gave everyone the benefit of the doubt. And even after countless warnings, people still voted to be banned. I mean, those people acted like children... testing waters and trying to see who will cave.

Why am I so crabby?
For a few reasons:
1) Have some respect for the competitors - they've worked long and hard (as many have) to build up their car. Give them the respect they deserve for taking the time, effort, and money.
2) Don't poop all over the voting thread... how would you feel if people said the votes are invalid or it was somehow rigged? Again, this ties in to #1.
3) Respect our Sponsors who have graciously provided prizes to our ROTM winners. They're putting money on the table to reward people, and we owe it to them to thank them for their contribution.
4) Take ROTM seriously. Seriously. If you don't like how things are run for the contest, then boycott it. I don't care. I'm sure people wouldn't either. I would rather people boycott it than put in an invalid nomination or screw up the votes.

So there. No Cliff's Notes on this one, folks. Post up your questions/comments. Again, none of my comments are directed to any one person, so take it with a grain of salt.

I wonder if there is a way to make the car's anonymous. What I mean, is that if there's a way to only put a member's picture of their car and attach a random number to it. That way, we're voting on essentially a car with a number attached, which has no significant meaning to us, rather than a car with a member attached, which allows for biases to come into play.

For example, I'm going to use Jeshua as an example because his car's picture happens to be in this thread for easy reference. What if we made it "Entrant Number 1: ASM FG." instead of "JESHUA'S ASM FG"? Based on my standing with the members up for nomination, I could be prejudiced against the member rather than the car, which would cause me not to vote for the RIDE that is most deserving. Because if anything, I could have the mentality that "Jeshua sucks" or whatnot, and then obviously I would not vote for him, even if his only competition was a smashed up pink Yaris.

Sorry for my ranting haha. (Oh yeah, no hate whatsoever against Jeshua)

Hmm... I think people would still know anyways. A lot of members/Mods/VIPs are here a lot to know each other's cars.

I agree. I know personally I could tell who onws alot of cars on here. Unless of course it was a car that isn't posted in pictures much. But if that is the case, chances are it wouldn't be known well enough to get nominated.

JUST getting a new camera isn't going to get you good pictures.. I can show you several people that still fail at picture taking with a nice camera.

Nice writeup Marc, but I dont like salt really.. but yeah.. I wish different cars would be nominated.. maybe you cant be nominated 2 months in a row? Especially there are only 5 slots.. as opposed to having 12 like we did in the past. I do know who I'm nominating next month for ROTM and I will provide a thorough explanation as to why as I have in the past.
