To reiterate some people's point, the lenses on the body is more important than the body itself. It is probably beneficial for you to buy a semi cheaper body and spend the remaining on a really good lense. If you don't know which kind of camera you want, as suggested before go play with them at the store. When are you looking to buy? Canon is coming up with the new version of the XTI mid April called the XSI. The camera will retail for 900 with a 28-115mm IS lens, which is pretty good lens. It has 12 MP and a live view feature. Also it has a 3 inch LCD screen, which may or may not be important to you. If your friend can get a discount on the camera (20%?), then you'd get the latest camera for the price of an XTI.

Also this bit of news for the XSI will also put the XTI on clearance, so if you're willing to wait another few months after the XSI is released and your Best Buy friend knows when the camera will go on clearance and save one for you, you could potentially get the XTI for around 400-500 - friend's discount or even less. The XTI goes for $598 on Amazon (no tax and free shipping) and I saw it at Office Depot for 560 +tax(if applicable). Just giving you a heads up if you're interested in the Canon XTI. Of course go play with it and see if you like it. (I do not own a Canon so no influences here =P, I actually own a Nikon D50)

I just wrote this long spiel about cameras about how the lens is more important than the body, but it doesn't appear to show up.

My advice to you, go play with a camera, any camera, all cameras

My second advice in my previous long post:
The Canon is releasing the XSI in mid April, which has 12 MP, 3 inch LCD screen(don't know if thats important to you), and also has live view which is like a point and shoot camera. The camera also comes with a 28-115mm(I think) IS lens, which is pretty good. If you're friend can get a discount off this camera ($900), you can essentially get the latest camera for the price of the XTI. This also means that the XTI will be put on clearance and if your friend finds out before hand, he can stash one for you until the price goes really really low. You will probably be able to buy it for 400-500 minus his discount since its already 598 on amazon(no tax and free shipping).(I do not own a Canon, I have a Nikon D50). If you're looking to buy sometime down the line, you could wait for this deal, but if not, buy whatever you think is best.

Its really up to how the feel of each camera is for you.

Advice #1: Go and play with the cameras at the store; that is the best way you will know which camera is best for you. The camera body is not as important as the lens and the person shooting the photo, so do not be discouraged by MPs etc.

Advice/Tip #2: Canon is releasing the new XSI mid April which boasts a 12MP sensor, 3 inch LCD screen(which may or may not be important), a 18-115mm IS lens(a pretty good lens) and live view(which is like point and shoot). If your friend can get a discount to this camera($900), then you could get this camera for basically the same price as the XTI. The release of this camera also means that the XTI will be on clearance and if your friend at Best Buy knows when they will go on clearance, he can hold one for you until the price gets extremely low. You could probably buy the XTI for 400-500 minus his discount or even lower since the camera is being sold on Amazon for $598(no tax and free shipping).

In any case, get a camera you like.
