what would you do in this situation.

ok, so i have my D40x. and i bought the warranty that if anything happens it will either be fixed or replaced.

and now im getting some specs in my pics when i shoot certian things, like the sky. i took it in this weekend and the guy said there is nothing on the senser or anything, and i know its not the lense because ive tried both of my lenses. i mean, its not really a big deal im just tired of PSing the specs out. and the guy at the camera shop said, i could send it off to get fixed and they would have to take it apart. but that would take 6-8 weeks, but i wouldnt have to pay anything.

but my idea was, take advantage of my warranty, and destroy my camera take it in and they would have to replace it. and since the D40x isnt made anymore, they would have to replace it with the D60. i know there isnt much difference about them but a new cam, is a new cam. and it would be repalced on the spot..

opinions?

What kind of warranty did you purchase?

In any case, check for yourself if there's dust specs on your image sensor.

the warranty i got covers everything, from dropping the camera to it baking in the car on a really hot day. the first week i had the camera i dropped it and took it in and the flash wouldnt pop up, and they gave me a new one.

he scanned it and said there was nothing, and said it looks more like condensation or something, but its been there for months and i hoped it would go away, i tried using a can of air and everything and its still got it in there.

Where did you get it though?

Don't use compressed air to clean your image sensor. If any of the contents get sprayed on, it creates film on the surface of the sensor. I ended up buying a real camera cleaning kit that has methanol, though the sensor swabs I got are too big.

D60 has a self cleaning image sensor =) come to the darkside!

PS Wolf Camera still has d40x's in stock so they would likely replace it with the same... If I were you Id wait a couple months and run that bitch over with your car (body only) and get the D60 ...

dude setting pre determined backgrounds is totally JDM dont you understand? *shakes fist*

btw the image sensor cleaning isnt full proof either, its not a dust eliminator it just reduces it... but its nice to know that it will definitely help and trips to get it cleaned wont be as often

I'm not sure how well the D60's self cleaning system works but I know when I had the XTi, it was completely useless. I would suggest that if you clean the D40x's sensor yourself, use a proper kit. Also do it in a room where its a bit humid (that way, no dust specs are floating around)

If it's anything like the 40D it's a slight vibration that more helps moving those specs toward the outside edge of the sensor rather than getting rid of it altogether.

hmm..the guy said its like a super sonic vibration that cleans the sensor. ill sit on it for a few more days/weeks and take it back to another wolf and see what they can do

Yeah, the image sensor generally shakes at high speed. However, it's usually static cling that sticks those specks to the sensor, so it'll likely move than fall off completely. And besides, most of the time your lens is on while it's doing this cleaning, so there's really nowhere for it to go other than back on your image sensor down the road.

I'd be debating it the same as you, if they took the camera for that long. Luckily, the Canon HQ here is just 30 minutes away, which is where I sent my camera in for warranty work 6 months ago. It was pure torture without it though.
