its cool haha it all lead to a link about lens.

but yes i think im still going with the D30 body (used) and i'll just get what ever lens i can find from ebay (used).

BigT and Izzy both suggested the 50mm f/1.8 but what other lens should i be looking into. i would want one that i can use for zoom

Yup. It seems, with camera stuff, if it's too good to be true. It not only is, but it's generally a bait & switch type of deal.

What kind of zoom are you looking for? If you're looking for a walkaround, I cannot recommend the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 enough. Great walkaround, but cost is about 500 new. But, it gives a good wide at 17mm on a crop body, and decent zoom at 50mm. Lens is sharp too. But, it's pricey. A great lens is also the Canon 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS. I prefer constant aperture lenses, but I loved using the 28-135 as well...a little soft at 135mm, but usable everywhere else.

x2.

500 dollar is good enough to get started.

You could get a Canon Rebel XT for around $350, 50mm f/1.8 for $80. That around $430.

You could spend the extra 70 dollars on memory card, tripod, etc.

But yeah like what Jeshua said $500 is nothing.

I would say just play around with the 50mm lens and work your way up from there. With this lens you could learn about depth of field. Then look into a new lens.

What's your budget for a zoom lens?

man its alot to think about. ill probly just leave the zoom lens for the future.

but i think ill do fine with the 50mm and a 18-55mm.

i am still very new to photography so there is no real need for an advance lens if i dont know how to use one.

thanks again everyone for your input, it really did help me out with what i wanted to buy

and i case anyone was wondering, i was planning to spend about $200 for body($70),lens($70),battery($10 if i dont find one that comes with the body), CF card($20)

yeah i know $200 is chump change but im about to start college and i need all the money i can save up. and ive been wanting a DSLR for a while now.

Those two lens are really good to learn out of. You could actually learn alot more if you use just use the 50mm. For example your composition.

Don't worry about being new, if you have will and open to learn then you'll be fine. I still conceder myself as a beginner as well. I've only been shooting less than a year now but I'm lucky enough to take digital photography which accelerated my learning.

Looking from your budget, I seriously doubt you'll find a decent body for around $200. It should be at least $400 for a body.

LOL. My Memory card was around $70.

But seriously photography is a expensive hobby. LOL my future set up is gonna require to sell my XTI and maybe my 24-70mm lens. And that's not even enough.
