Only thing about Canon's nifty fifty is the AF (auto focus) is absolutely terrible.

Very. I've actually tried the Mark I, and the AF is much better. Still slow, but it's noticeably faster than the Mk II. Sturdier build too.

You don't have to have internal focus motor. You can always manual focus with the Nikkor niftyfifty. I have a D40 with the nifty fifty and works perfectly fine.

I took these with the nifty fifty (manual focus)

The 50mm is not good enough for what he wants to shoot. He needs something wider than the 28-135. He should get a wide angle lens

Here's what I recommend
Canon 10-22
Sigma 10-20
Tokina 12-24

Those lens are great choices to do cars, and a scenery. For animals you could use your 28-135mm or if you have to get something like the 70-200mm f/4L. Depending on your budget.

Both great lenses. Very good prices. You can get a 70-200 f4 used for a good price.

Amazon.com: Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras: Camera & Photo

What do you guys think about this lens? Anyone have any experience with it? I'm looking for a good walkabout lens. Can't afford any L-series right now.

That lens is a good walkaround lens. But the only thing I would be worried about is not having the wide angle side. I would say the canon 17-85 would be a better walk around. I would say get it, and see how you like it. What lens do you have now?

But just like what Jeshua said there's alot of people who's selling theirs for really cheep. It's usually from the $300 range though.

I've got a Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and a Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6. Couple of cheapy lenses that I've been using to learn and practice with, but now I'd like something where I won't have to switch back and forth between the two lenses as much.

Why do you want to do that? That's one of the great things about a DSLR which is changing the lens. If you don't like changing the lens get a Point and shoot.

If you get one of those 18-250 or 18-200, you're gonna be sacrificing image quality and even stops.

That's why I was inquiring about the 28-135. I never mentioned getting a 18-250 or 18-200. I don't mind changing lenses when necessary, but with a good walk-around I don't have to as much. Besides, just because you own a DSLR doesn't mean you have to sacrifice practicality.

The 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS is a great lens, and very user-friendly for a walkaround. Using a friend's, with a crop camera, I think you'd miss anything below 24mm very much though. It's not a light lens, but it's very handy and fits well even on the XT and XTi bodies. You get some very sharp pictures with it. My only problem would be (and it's a small complaint) is that it gets softer after 100mm.

Sorry. But when you mentioned your gear list the 18-55 and 75-300 those two lens popped into my head.

If you want a good walk around lens get the Canon 17-85. I would say that would be better than the 28-135 because it's wider. Remember you would always walk closer to your subject.

If you don't want to stick with Canon, I heartily recommend the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8. $500, with a constant aperture, and I was really happy with the pictures. Main caveat is that it only goes to 50mm.

They also have their Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 though, which is good, and much cheaper than my 24-70mm f2.8L.

It's actually a 28-75mm.
