Canon EOS 40D

I recently purchased a Canon EOS 40D but I noticed that I forgot to get a tripod. Anyone out there have the same camera or a similar one and has an idea of a good tripod?

That last thing you want to do is get a cheap-o tripod for your ~$1K investment! Go for the good brands - they'll give you flexibility, durability, and peace of mind. Bogen Manfrotto is good but pricey. I have a GIOTTOS MT93 tripod... good stuff. Very sturdy and lots of configurations, good metal base too... just a tad heavy (~10lbs).

i bought mine a while ago its all aluminum weighs about 2lb, extends to 6.5 feet(from 24"), and like i said its 10 years old, i bought it for my 600 camera and its good enough for my 1000+ worth of cannon gear. i really dont think that you always need to buy the absolute best yo have nice things, im cairfull and things last... i mean it would have been nice to buy something made of titaniume or steel but i think my $20 tripod has stood the test of time...

i have one thats close to this and i love it...(but its taller.)

IMO, two pounds is too light for a tripod. I think weight is a pretty important factor in a tripod because you don't want it shaking if there's any minor winds. I usually hang my camera bag on the tripod as well to add some extra weight. Bogen Manfrotto is a good tripod though, just a tad expensive.

thats a good point, i have found my tripod lacking mass, but i built a shutter switch and like you hang my camera bag on it... with long 20+ sec. exp. times if i hit the shuter button it would slightly jarr the camera and cause a slight blur, with the remont it doest...

A good alternative if you don't have a remote is using the self-timer function. Unfortunately, I don't have a remote, however I get around it by using this technique.

An easy way to reduce shake is to also use mirror lock-up and timer. It also has the added benefit of lowering the timing for the Timer function to like...3 seconds instead of 10.

I would also not cheap out on a tripod, especially when you get to those 4-5 pound lenses. A cheap tripod will not hold that weight easily, and you can easily see cheap tripods bow at the legs.

However, I will say that I'm currently using a "cheap" ($60) tripod from Sunpak, and it holds my 30D and my friend's 24-70mm f2.8L fairly easily. But, panning and locking the neck on it is terrible and it's not exact...it will always shift a degree or two when I move it where I want it, then tighten up the clamps. Suck.
